Kristianne Blake Appointed To Higher Education Board

Kristianne Blake has been appointed to the board of directors of the Joint Center for Higher Education by Gov. Mike Lowry.

Blake will be one of 15 board members responsible for development of Riverpoint Higher Education Park in Spokane and management of the Spokane Intercollegiate Research & Technology Institute.

Blake, certified in both accounting and financial planning, operates her own accounting practice in Spokane. Her memberships include the Washington State Securities Advisory Committee, the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Blake holds civic leadership positions with the Spokane Community College Foundation, United Way of Spokane County, the Junior League of Spokane and the YMCA.

Lowry also reappointed Carol Wendle, Mac McGrath and David Clack to additional four-year terms to the JCHE.

Army Pfc. David M. Vaughn, son of Michael C. and Beth A. Vaughn, Cheney, has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal, given for meritorious service, acts of courage or other outstanding accomplishments.

Vaughn, a 1994 graduate of Cheney High School, is a forward heavy-vehicle crew member in Kitzingen, Germany.

Aylee Russell and Doug Tooke, both of Spokane, tied for first place in the parliamentary debate in the University of Nebraska forensics tournament. Both are students at Carroll College in Helena.

Russell was named outstanding debater in the tournament. Tooke received an award as fifth-best speaker in the debate.

Manda Hicks, Spokane, and her partner finished second in duet interpretation. Hicks also reached the finals in after-dinner speaking.

Joan Menzies, assistant dean of students at Washington State University in Pullman, has been appointed director of student services at WSU Spokane.

Menzies, a member of the WSU Student Affairs staff for more than 16 years, holds a masters degree in English from California State University at Fullerton. She will be responsible for recruitment, enrollment, financial aid and student life programs at WSU Spokane.

Marine Cpl. Christopher M. Nicholson, son of Michael L. and Carol A. Nicholson, Spokane, was recently promoted to his present rank while serving with the 2nd Assault Amphibious Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Nicholson’s promotion was based on sustained superior job performance and proficiency in his designated specialty.

He is a 1985 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and a 1991 graduate of Whitworth College.
