Create A Family Heirloom In 6-Foot Grandfather Clock

Don And Dave Runyan U-Bild Features

Here’s a do-it-yourself opportunity to build a true family heirloom. With its classic good looks and sturdy design, this traditional grandfather clock may grace the family’s hallways and living rooms for generations to come.

It’s really an impressive piece. Standing 6 feet tall, the clock can be built from cherry, pine, walnut or mahogany. It is designed to fit the famous Westminster clock movement, which authentically reproduces the chimes of London’s Big Ben.

Although it does take some time and attention to detail, the project is not difficult. The clock case is essentially a large rectangular box, so several of the wood cuts are straight cuts that are butt-jointed. The curved cuts for the clock’s crowns, base and decorative plaque are traced from full-size patterns.

Once the case is built, the decorative molding, which can be cut or bought ready-made, is affixed and the clock movements are installed. Several different types can be used, including inexpensive batterypowered models. If the movements aren’t available locally, a mail-order source can provide them.

To finish, add glass panels and seal and stain the wood.

The Grandfather Clock plan, No. 558, is $6.50 and includes complete step-by-step directions with 17 photos, full-size traceable patterns and a shopping list and cutting schedule.

A package of four clock plans, No. C80, is $17.95 and includes plans for this grandfather clock, a “granddaughter” clock, a calendar clock and a wall clock. A catalog picturing hundreds of do-it-yourself projects is $3.95. Prices include sales tax, postage and handling.
