Eagles Pull Rank On Ev

Joe Everson Correspondent

Frontier League

The East Valley student body won the coveted toilet bowl title again, but West Valley’s defense took basketball honors in the Frontier League Golden Throne hoops and spirit contest Friday night at WV.

Facing a Knights team that had won two straight league contests, the third-ranked Eagles (6-1, 13-2) went on a 4-minute, 15-0 run beginning late in the second period, and ran away from EV 70-47.

WV had a huge 54-30 rebounding edge. The Eagles were especially impressive at the offensive end, where they had 10 rebound baskets.

Eagles junior Vinnie Pecht, a sometimes foul-prone 6-foot-5, 210-pounder, had his best game of the season with 17 points, 14 rebounds and two blocked shots. Twelve of his boards came in the first half, when WV scored the last eight points for a 33-24 lead.

Junior guard Josh Sweet buried five 3-point baskets, scoring 17 points and adding several sparkling assists, and senior post Joe Bonner had 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Eagles shot nearly 50 percent even with a sub-par performance from scoring leader David Schillinger, who made only two field goals and seven points.

EV, on the other hand, made only 22 of 67 field goal attempts and James Spotted Horse, after 10 points in the first half, finished with only 12. The Knights (2-5, 5-10) didn’t make a free throw, with Spotted Horse missing all four EV attempts.

“We played very well defensively tonight,” WV coach Joe Feist said. “I thought East Valley did a good job early against our press, but they had a few more problems when we backed it up a bit.

“We tried to keep a fresh guy on Spotted Horse all the time. We really needed to know where he was, and we didn’t want to give Brad Wilson a good look at the 3. Those were our two biggest defensive goals going in.”

Feist had cautioned Pecht before the game. “Don’t go crazy out there,” he said in the Eagles locker room. “Keep yourself on the floor.”

It was advice well taken. “If I get too excited early, I usually get myself in foul trouble and don’t play much later,” Pecht said.

East Valley 55, West Valley 51

WV (2-5, 8-7) scored the final nine points of the first half after trailing by seven, but the Knights’ inside strength powered them to a narrow victory. The biggest second-half lead for either team was four points. There were seven ties.

Angela Overdorff scored 11 secondhalf points for EV, eight in the third period as the Knights (3-4, 8-7) stopped the Eagles charge and WV missed several layins and made numerous key turnovers.

The Eagles’ last lead was 45-44 early in the fourth period on Keisha Sowers’ putback, but EV’s Star Olson promptly hit a 3-pointer.

The score was tied at 47 and again at 49, but EV broke WV’s press for Olson’s layup and a 51-49 lead. Farrah Parsley drove the lane on EV’s next possession for a 53-49 advantage, and WV - despite many opportunities - didn’t score after Stacey Roberts’ jumper at :55.

Overdorff finished with 15 points and Olson had 12, while Linsay Porter had 11 assists and Parsley 10 rebounds. For West Valley, Gaby McClintock and Sowers each scored 12 and Dawn Salfer 11.
