Majoli Wins Pan Pacific

Seventh-seeded Iva Majoli of Croatia defeated third seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain 6-4, 6-1 in the final of the Toray Pan Pacific women’s tennis tournament today.

In the semis on Saturday, Vicario beat fellow Spaniard and second-seeded Conchita Martinez 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 6-4, 6-1. Majoli, who upset top seed Monica Seles in the quarterfinals, rallied to defeat 15-year-old Martina Hingis of Switzerland 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Andre Agassi, who is about to lose the No. 1 ranking to Thomas Muster, consoled himself by beating Pete Sampras in an exhibition at Atlanta, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
