Mcclatchy Awaits Vote

Compiled From Wire Services

Pittsburgh Pirates buyer Kevin McClatchy, undeterred by the last-minute pullout of one of his biggest investors, filed his final paperwork on schedule with Major League Baseball.

McClatchy, a California businessman, whose $90 million takeover of the deeply-in-debt team was approved last week by baseball’s ownership committee, now awaits a vote of the 28 club owners. He must be approved by 10 of the 14 National League owners and eight of the 14 American League owners.

Pitcher Orel Hershiser, who is under contract to the Cleveland Indians through 1997, auditioned for a job as an analyst on the Fox network’s baseball coverage.

The Indians confirmed that Hershiser interviewed with the network, which will begin telecasts of Major League Baseball on June 1.

Boston infielder Wil Cordero, obtained last month from the Montreal Expos, avoided an arbitration hearing by agreeing to a $1.85 million, one-year contract with the Red Sox.

Former Spokane Indians infielder Paul Faries was invited to spring training by the Chicago Cubs.

Negotiators for the owners and the players are scheduled to meet in New York today. Union representatives reportedly plan to present a counterproposal to a proposal the owners’ negotiating team made Nov. 15.

Fifty-two percent of San Francisco’s voters favor a measure to construct a $255 million privately financed stadium in the city’s China Basin District, according to a poll in the San Francisco Chronicle.
