Roof Collapse Kills Firefighter

Associated Press

The roof of a burning auto-body shop collapsed Monday as firefighters were trying to douse the flames, killing one fireman. Thirteen others were injured battling the blaze.

Other firefighters saved themselves from the fallen roof by crouching between cars, but Louis Valentino, 37, was trapped underneath.

Chief of Operations Donald Burns said, “We had to get air bags and pick up some of the beams so they could get him out from under the beams. He was in cardiac arrest.”

More than 150 firefighters battled the blaze that sent smoke pouring into the nearby Brooklyn Health and Racquet Club, forcing its evacuation.
