Second-Half Scoring Surge Lifts Kansas Over Iowa St.

Scot Pollard scored 20 points and Raef LaFrentz had 17 as third-ranked Kansas used a powerful inside game along with sharp 3-point shooting in a 15-0 run in the second half to stop No. 21 Iowa State 89-70 Wednesday night at Lawrence, Kan.

Kansas (19-1, 7-0 Big Eight) followed its pattern of wearing down opponents in the second half after a tightly played first half as the Jayhawks beat the Cyclones (16-5, 5-2) for the 14th straight time in Allen Field House.

Iowa State trailed just 40-36 at the half.

At Nashville, Tenn., the Wildcats (19-1, 9-0 Southeastern Conference) opened with a 21-4 run en route to routing the Commodores (14-8, 4-5).

At Cincinnati, Danny Fortson scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half as the Bearcats (18-1, 7-1 Conference USA) completed a perfect six-game homestand by beating the Billikens (12-8, 3-6).

At Winston-Salem, N.C., Rusty LaRue powered a second-half run that sent the Demon Deacons (15-3, 7-2) into sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a win over the Seminoles (10-9, 2-7).

At Lubbock, Texas, Jason Sasser scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Red Raiders (19-1, 8-0 Southwest Conference) defeated the Horned Frogs (11-11, 2-5).

At Madison, Wis., reserve guard Todd Foster scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half as the Boilermakers (18-4, 8-2 Big Ten) pulled away from the Badgers.

At Pittsburgh, John Wallace scored 25 points to help the Orangemen (17-6, 7-5 Big East) hold off a second-half rally and beat the Panthers (9-10, 4-7).

At Evanston, Ill., Jess Settles matched his career high with 29 points and the Hawkeyes (16-6, 5-5 Big Ten) overcame the loss of Chris Kingsbury with strong inside play to beat the Wildcats (6-13, 1-9).

At New York, freshman Scoonie Penn scored 20 points and the Eagles (14-5, 7-4 Big East) used a quick burst of 3-pointers in the second half to take control on the way to a win over the Red Storm (8-11, 2-9).

At Kalamazoo, Mich., Derrick Dial scored 21 points as the Eagles (17-2, 10-1 Mid-American Conference) rallied from an 11-point deficit to down the Broncos (9-10, 7-4).
