Dollar Gains Ground Vs. Yen

The dollar rose against the Japanese yen Thursday after Japanese officials made it easier for big investors to send their money overseas. But the dollar finished lower against European currencies.

During Asian trading, the dollar surged against the yen and helped lift the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s best-known index to a 19-month high.

By 4 p.m. in New York, the dollar was trading at 1.4755 marks, down from 1.4770 on Wednesday. It finished at 106.95 yen, compared with 106.10 the day before.
