Jane Baker Selected For Intern Program

Jane K. Baker, a graduate student in the master of science program at Eastern Washington University, is one of three students selected from four Western states and three Western Canadian provinces to participate in the Minority Student Intern Program.

The program is sponsored by District VIII of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Baker, who has 14 years experience in radio broadcasting, will help develop a fund-raising plan for EWU’s department of radio and television.

She is a 1981 graduate of East Valley High School and graduated summa cum laude last year with a liberal-arts degree from EWU.

She was assistant editor of the Willow Springs literary magazine at Eastern, a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society, named to the Dean’s List and earned an EWU Academic Merit Scholarship.

While a student at Spokane Community College, Baker was a member of the President’s Honor Roll and assistant editor of Legends, a literary magazine.

Barry K. Jones has been elected president of El Katif Shrine, the Shriners of Eastern Washington.

He has been a Shrine officer the past nine years.

Jones has served on the boards of the Washington State University Foundation, WSU Spokane, WSU Athletics, Deaconess Medical Foundation, Children’s Miracle Network Telethon and the Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce. He has also been president of Spokane Downtown Rotary No. 21, WSU Alumni Association, Knife and Fork International and the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of Washington.

Vanessa Waldref, a sophomore at Gonzaga Prep, has been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. Waldref, daughter of George and Rita Waldref, Spokane, is one of 350 students nationwide chosen to attend.

The theme of the six-day conference is “The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today.”
