Palouse Prairie Classes Offer Quick Fix For Late Valentine’s Day Shoppers

Those who are crafts-inclined and still looking for a Valentine’s Day gift can pop into a workshop Saturday at Palouse Prairie, 703 N. Monroe. The one-hour classes feature a demonstration of pressing, storing and using flowers and plants, and participants will make a pressed-flower bookmark. They start at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Cost is $22; call 327-0430 for information about this workshop or a class schedule of spring workshops.

For competitive gardeners: It’s not too early to start planning your entry for the Sunshine Creative Windowbox Contest.

The prize: a seven-day trip for two to Venice, Italy.

To enter you’ll need to take a photo of your window box. Contest categories include: Best Use of Color, Most Whimsical Window Box, Best Use of Trailing Plants, Best Before and After Window Box, Best Window Box That Solves a Problem, Best Theme, Best Community Beautification Project Using Window Boxes and Best Use of Edibles. Entry deadline is Aug. 1.

For contest rules and entry forms, call Sun Gro Horticulture at (800) 665-4592. Be sure to ask for the free 16-page booklet “Creative Ideas for Window Boxes from Sunshine.”

Fast fact: We’re in the middle of National Bird Feeding Month and with the recent arctic temperatures and snow, the birds in the area are literally flocking to well-stocked feeders. Expect to see house finch and English sparrows in abundance. Fruit still clinging to trees such as mountain ash draws waxwings and robins.

Shed some light: We know an essential part of home safety is installing smoke detectors throughout our homes. But in addition, it’s important to keep flashlights handy in bedrooms; otherwise, evacuation must be accomplished in the dark should a nighttime fire knock out power to the house.

Some smoke detectors have a built-in safety light that flashes when the alarm sounds, guiding residents to safety.
