Fines Paid With Phony Check
Arrest warrants have been issued for two anti-government activists charged with trying to pay traffic fines with a bogus check.
Prosecutors filed charges of felony bad check writing Thursday against LeRoy Schweitzer and Steve McNeil.
Schweitzer is accused of sending McNeil a check to cover $2,574 in traffic fines. The check was written to both McNeil and District Judge Thomas Olson.
McNeil, 46, is accused of endorsing the check and submitting it to Olson for payment of the fines in December.
Olson called a bank and learned it was no good and then contacted police.
Schweitzer is a self-described freeman who used to live in Belgrade, Mont.
McNeil, 46, is also a self-proclaimed freeman who last May was charged with using homemade license plates on his truck.
