Teachers Janice Thorson, Margie Naccarato Honored
Margie Naccarato and Janice Thorson have been named Distinguished Teachers for the school year’s second quarter by Spokane Public School District area directors.
The women were honored recently during a Spokane Club luncheon hosted by U.S. Bank, a corporate sponsor of the event.
Naccarato, a second-grade teacher at Cooper Elementary, has served on several committees for the school, including instructional and TV, reading and math, and safety. She also sings with the Spokane Falls Chorus of Sweet Adelines.
One of her students said, “She makes work so fun we want to do it even if it’s hard.”
Thorson, a fifth-grade teacher at Pratt Elementary, has taught for 27 years.
She spends many hours after school with home visitations, early and late-afternoon parent conferences and assisting students who have difficulty getting to school, said Jeannie Baynes, Pratt’s principal.
Thorson is an avid gardener and a volunteer for Friends of Manito Park
The Rev. Robert V. Smith recently received a doctorate in ministry from Northwest Graduate School of the Ministry in Kirkland, Wash.
Smith received his master’s in religious studies from Whitworth College in 1985, a Bachelor of Arts from the Inland Empire School of the Bible in 1978 and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Eastern Washington University in 1973.
Smith, who has been pastor at Community Bible Chapel for 18 years, was also chaplain of the Spokane Fire Department for 15 years and is an instructor at Moody Bible Institute-Northwest external studies.
Marine Lance Cpl. Jeremy Z. Waud, a 1994 Shadle High School graduate, was recently promoted to his present rank while serving with the Security Battalion, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif. Waud was promoted for superior job performance and proficiency in his designated specialty.
Luke Bakken, a graduate of University High School, was named to the fall Dean’s List for academic achievement at the University of Rochester in New York. A sophomore, Bakken is majoring in computer science at Rochester and in bassoon at the Eastman School of Music.
Two Spokane residents have been named to the Dean’s List for the 1995-96 fall semester at George Fox College in Newburg, Ore.:
Elizabeth Voogd, daughter of William and Carol Voogd, is majoring in liberal arts.
Sharon Wruble, daughter of Walt and Linda Wruble, is majoring in elementary education.
