Transplanted Wolf Found Dead

From Staff And Wire Reports

One of the wolves transplanted into Yellowstone National Park in 1995 was found dead on a highway near Daniel on Sunday, according to federal and state officials.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and state Game and Fish Department officials were investigating the area where the wolf’s body was found west of Daniel, about 66 miles southeast of Jackson.

Steve Fritts, the Fish and Wildlife Service’s chief scientist for gray wolf recovery in the region, said agents tentatively identified the wolf as “No. 12,” one released in the Soda Butte area of Yellowstone in 1995.

Fritts said he had not heard how

the wolf died.

The wolf had been one of 14 captured in Canada and moved to Yellowstone as part of the continuing federal effort to return wolves to America’s northern Rockies. Another 15 were released in central Idaho.
