Clutch Free Throws Key Rogers’ Romp
GSL girls
Rogers hit clutch free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away from visiting Gonzaga Prep to complete its best Greater Spokane League girls basketball season in seven years with the 51-41 victory on Thursday.
The game was tied at 31 entering the fourth quarter but Rogers (6-14, 5-11) used free-throw shooting to win it. The Pirates finished 11 of 18 while Gonzaga Prep (11-9, 7-9) was 9 of 26.
Jaime Christensen had 10 points and six assists for Rogers, Anna Mullerleile added 10 points and Lemandy Tannehill had nine rebounds.
Theresa Palmer had 18 of her career-high 20 in the first half for Prep.
The Bullpups raced to a 16-4 lead after one quarter but the Pirates rallied to tie the game at halftime.
Rogers, which had beaten Prep just one time in 36 games coming into the season, swept the Bullpups. It was the first season sweep of any GSL team other than North Central since Rogers beat Ferris twice in 1988-89.
Even though Prep and University tied for fifth, the Bullpups get the fifth seed going into the district tournament next week by virtue of their two wins over U-Hi. Prep will play Shadle Park in the 7:15 game at the Arena, U-Hi plays Central Valley at 3:35.
