Valley Christian At District

For just the second time in school history, Valley Christian’s boys basketball team is in the Northeast B district tournament.

The Panthers beat Ritzville 49-45 to qualify for the eight-team event which advances three teams to the State B tournament in the Spokane Arena.

VC took a four-point lead after a quarter and nursed it throughout the game. Ritzville trailed by just a point after three periods.

The win came following a onepoint loss to Liberty in the first game of the double elimination portion of the event.

In three Bi-County playoff games, Jeremy Sandin averaged just under 17 points per game, while Michael Spuler and Aaron Asbury averaged just under 13 per contest.

Bi County teams in district are Almira/Coulee-Hartline, Reardan, Liberty and the Panthers.

From the Panorama League the entrants are Republic, St. George’s, Northwest Christian and Selkirk.

NWGA gymnasts shine

Northwest Gymnastics Association boys team turned in a strong effort at the Valentine’s Open in Tigard, Ore.

Two gymnasts, Kevin Olson and Brian Velategui, were all-around winners.

Velategui beat teammate Nick Antich by .05 point with his 36.0 score in Level IV, age 12-13. He won parallel bars and Antich the pommel horse.

Olson won all-around for Class V ages 10-11 with a 38.10 score. Included were wins on pommel horse, vault and high bar.

Other placers included Glen Hannibal with first place on floor exercise in Level III. Aaron Sheck was second during Junior Elite II floor exercise and Dillon Reeve was second on vault.

In Junior Elite I, Chris Jones was second on parallel bars.

Paul Hannibal finished second all-around in Level VI age 7-9.

SEG Level 5 girls win

Spokane Elite Gymnastics’ Level 5 team finished first in the Wings Gymnastics meet in Boise last weekend.

Rachel Matthews led the way with a 35.9 all-around score that tied for second. Sarah Woodard and Melissa Buchheit finished in the top 10.

Woodard was first on vault at 9.2 and Matthews tied for second. Buchheit and Matthews tied for first on beam with 9.0 scores.

Matthews won floor exercise at 9.45 and Jenna Morales was second at 9.4. The girls are part of a 19-member Level 5 team.

Rabbit run rapidly approaching

East Valley’s 12th Rapid Rabbit Run, an annual school fund-raiser is Saturday, March 23.

The 5-mile portion of the run, at 10 a.m., continues as one of three qualifiers for the Lilac Bloomsday second-seeding, behind the race’s elite entrants.

In addition there will be a 3-mile race which follows an hour later.

Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each category of each race. Every entrant will be given a ticket for prize drawings at the awards ceremony.

EV boys cross country team and parents will serve a pancake breakfast from 10:30 to 12:30 for $3 and $2. Race entry is $10 which includes a T-shirt.

Race forms are available at area sporting goods stores. After March 1 they will be available from EV High students and at all schools in the district.
