Black History Essay Winners Honored
The winners of the 1996 Black History Month Essay Contest were honored Saturday at the Ridpath Hotel.
More than 500 area students entered the contest, which was sponsored by the Black Education Program at Eastern Washington University and the Martin Luther King Center in Spokane.
The winners received a certificate from Gov. Mike Lowry and cash awards donated by Spokane businesses and organizations.
The theme of the 1996 contest for all age categories was “Black History: Past, Present & Future.”
The winners were: Grades 4 to 6: Julius DeFour of Grant Elementary School won $75 for first place; Austin Washington of Moran Prairie Elementary School won $50 for second place; Katie Ebbighausen of Cheney Middle School received an honorable mention.
Grades 7 to 9: Lance Neely of Medical Lake Middle School won $100 for first place and Sylvester Chatman of Chase Middle School won $75 for second place.
Grades 10 to 12: Ariel Smith of Lewis and Clark High School won $150 for first place and Satirhea Goncalves of Ferris High School won $100 for second.
In the college division: April Burns of Eastern Washington University won $200 for first place and Daryl Parker, also of Eastern, won $100 for second. , DataTimes
