Balcony Collapses, Killing 1, Hurting 11

Compiled From Wire Services

A balcony that collapsed during a party, killing one woman and injuring 11 people, may have been weakened by dry rot or rain, investigators said Sunday.

As many as 20 people may have been on the wooden third-story balcony Saturday night, and their weight could have led to the collapse, a Fire Department official said. The balcony tore loose from a Victorian home in the Pacific Heights district.

One woman, 26, was in critical condition.
