Roberts Adds Another Title To Family Collection

When University High junior Andy Roberts won his second State AAA wrestling title Saturday, it gave the Roberts family state championships in five weight classes.

Oldest brother Kevin, now 28-1 for the University of Oregon, won at 115 pounds in 1991.

Middle brother Dusty, also at Oregon, won in 1993 at 135 pounds and in 1995 at 148.

Andy, the youngest, won at 108 pounds in 1994 and at 129 this year.

Last year he was unable to wrestle because of injury.

“It kind of crushed me,” he said of the injury he suffered while practicing against Dusty prior to district. “It wasn’t a very good time although I enjoyed watching Dusty win.”

Fear of tendon damage at the bottom joint of his broken left thumb and the pain he felt just touching something, contributed to his decision to sit out the tournament.

It also made him come back with a purpose this year and he finished the season at 33-2. His three-year record at University is 85-11.

“The first one was pretty fun,” said Roberts after winning his final 10-6. “That ran through my head every hour all week. Being out on the single mat and winning again is a rush you can’t describe.”

Since Dusty missed a 141-pound title in ‘94 will that be the weight Andy goes for next year?

“As of now I don’t see myself moving up,” he said. “I’m making weight easy.”

University finished sixth in the state tournament, including Jared Osborn’s fourth-place finish at 115-pounds. All four Region IV state qualifiers reached the tournament’s semifinals.
