Wildcats Remain Hot, Stop Ewu

Shooting clinic, Part II.

Roughly a month after shooting a ridiculously hot 71 percent from the field against Eastern Washington, the Weber State Wildcats “cooled” to 54.5 percent on Thursday night and waxed the Eagles again, this time 106-83, in front of 6,313 at the Dee Events Center.

Three Wildcats topped the 20-point barrier. Jimmy DeGraffenried (8 of 12 from the floor, 26 points), Andy Smith (6 of 7, 22) and Justyn Tebbs (8 of 14, 21) led the Wildcats to the romp.

DeGraffenried and Smith each made 9 of 9 from the foul line. WSU, second nationally in free-throw percentage at 77.5, dropped in 26 of 28 (92.9).

The Eagles matched WSU’s hot shooting in the first half. Each team connected on 17 of 28 from the floor, but Weber had better success at the foul line and on 3-pointers and led 53-46.

EWU, which clawed back from a 17-point hole in the first half behind Luke Egan’s 11 points, had no answer when Weber reeled off seven points in the first minute of the second half.

Ryan Cuff’s 3-pointer gave the Wildcats their biggest lead at 96-66 with 4:37 left.

The Wildcats, who remain in the chase for the conference championship, also enjoyed 43-23 rebounding superiority. EWU was blistered by Weber State 119-88 last month. In that one, WSU was 15 of 20 on 3s and shot 85 percent in the first half.

Egan saw his streak of consecutive free throws end at 40. He finished with 13 points. Eastern teammates Travis King and D’mitri Rideout each had 12.
