Rice Nabs Another Record

Whitworth’s Jerry Rice continued his record-setting ways Friday with a victory in the men’s 400 individual medley on the second day of the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges Swimming Championships at Whitworth College.

Rice’s time of 4 minutes, 11.13 seconds eclipsed the previous meet record by 1.37 seconds. On Thursday, he established a record in the 200 IM and was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.

The Pirates’ Jan Okata won her second event in as many days with a time of 4:46.02 in the 400 IM.

College wrestling

At Bismarck, N.D., North Idaho College advanced four wrestlers into the semifinal round of the 37th annual National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament at Bismarck State College.

NIC, ranked No. 1 in the final NJCAA poll, sits second in the 40-team event with 29 points. Defending champion Lassen (Calif.) College grabbed the team lead with 39 and has six semifinalists.

College baseball

At Malibu, Calif., the Washington State University baseball team lost its eighth straight game as Pepperdine made the most of its five singles to beat the Cougars 4-3.

Freshman pinch-hitter David Sugden’s bases loaded sacrifice fly with one out in the ninth propelled the Waves (6-8) to their second straight win over the Cougars. Ryan Post (0-1) took the loss for WSU (5-10).

Women’s basketball

At Moraga, Calif., Kelly Parkinen scored 11 of her 19 points in the second half to lift the Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team to a 74-63 win over Gonzaga.

The Gaels (17-8, 7-6 West Coast Conference) led just 35-32 2 minutes into the second half, but went on a 22-5 run to break the game open.

The Bulldogs (4-21, 2-11) shot just 25-58 from the field.
