Obituaries

William Phillips Spokane

Memorial service for William E. “Bill” Phillips, 69, will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Phillips, who was born in Cresbard, S.D., died Thursday.

He was a previous longtime Eugene, Ore., resident and owned Phillips Plaster and Patching Co., there. He moved to Spokane in 1979, and continued his plastering business. He retired in 1994.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Elva Phillips; three sons, Dale Phillips of Salem, Ore., Jim Phillips of Mead and Dellvon Phillips of Deer Park; one daughter, Darla Widger of Bend, Ore.; one brother, Don Phillips of Junction City, Ore.; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Jack Mettler St. Maries

Service for Jack Mettler, 76, will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mr. Mettler, who was born in North Dakota, died Thursday.

He grew up in Wisconsin and North Dakota and served in the Army Infantry and Air Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

After his military discharge, he lived in Seattle, where he drove a bus for the transit system. He later lived in Montana and in Ellensburg, where he graduated from Central Washington University.

He retired in 1980 and moved to St. Maries in 1983.

Mr. Mettler enjoyed his grandchildren and was recently helping raise three of them. He also enjoyed camping, gardening, hunting and fishing.

He was a member of the St. Maries Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Fern; two sons, Jan of Spokane and Darald of Ellensburg; two daughters, Nena Kukes of Ellensburg and Susan Toncheff of Mount Vernon, Wash.; two brothers, Gordon of Ellensburg and Don of Florida; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

George Hayes Harrison, Idaho

Memorial service for George T. Hayes, 73, will be March 2, at 11 a.m. at the Harrison Community Baptist Church. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hayes, who was born in Minneapolis, Minn., died Tuesday.

He grew up in Spokane, graduating from North Central High School in 1941. He served with the Army in Europe during World War II.

Following his military discharge, he returned to Spokane and later attended Lewiston Normal School and Washington State University, graduating with a degree in fine arts.

Mr. Hayes moved to Harrison in 1967 and taught and coached football and wrestling at Kootenai High School.

He retired in 1985.

He was a member of the College Avenue Baptist Church of St. Maries and the Crane Historical Society of Harrison.

He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Rita; four sons, Tony of Kent, Wash., Marty of Chehalis, Wash., Randy of Idaho Falls and Lonnie Hayes of New Mexico; two stepsons, Ted Cederblom of Spokane and Larry Cederblom of Federal Way, Wash.; one brother, Richard of Lewiston; and four grandchildren.

Samuel Snyder Newport, Wash.

No service will be held for Samuel M. Snyder, 89, at his request. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Snyder, who died Sunday at Pend Oreille Pines Nursing Home, was born in Niota, Tenn.

In 1940 he married Marjorie Pietz in Honolulu. He retired from the Boeing Co. in 1969.

He and his wife traveled extensively after his retirement but kept Newport as their home base.

Mr. Snyder is survived by his wife; one daughter, Nancy Romero of Priest River, Idaho; one son, Wayne Snyder of Spokane; three brothers, one sister, two grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Patrick Parsons Deary, Idaho

Memorial service for Patrick Parsons, 81, was held at an earlier date. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow, Idaho, was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Parsons, who was born in Naples, Idaho, died Jan. 24.

He attended schools in Naples and Bonners Ferry, Idaho, before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1940.

Mr. Parsons worked for the Forest Service for 11 years before co-owning an auto repair and service station in Deary.

He served on the Deary City Council and was Deary mayor for 10 years as well as being involved in many activities in Latah County.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Anna; one son, Patrick Parsons Jr. of Portland; two grandchildren and three great-grandsons.

Stanley Dowding Spokane

No service will be held for Stanley Gill Dowding, 79, at his request. Bleitz Funeral Home in Bellevue, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dowding, a former Spokane resident, died Feb. 17. He was born in Kamloops, British Columbia.

He worked for Norton Simon Industries in the Hunt-Wesson product division as a district sales manager.

He had lived in Spokane for 34 years and moved to Seattle in 1995.

Mr. Dowding is survived by one daughter, Susan Dowding Murray of Seattle; one son, Kent Dowding of Ashland, Ore.; two brothers, Bert and Gordon Dowding, both of Vancouver, British Columbia; and two granddaughters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

William ‘Randy’ Colomb Cheney

Graveside burial of the urn for William R. “Randy” Colomb, 92, was Monday at Pinecrest Cemetery in Sandpoint.

Mr. Colomb, a former Sandpoint resident, died Feb. 15. He was born in Perry, Ore.

He had worked as a lumber mill planing supervisor and retired in 1970.

He moved to Cheney in 1972.

He was a member of Boy Scouts of America and the Masonic Temple.

Mr. Colomb is survived by his wife of 73 years, Bessie Colomb; one daughter, Marie Osterberg of Cheney; five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Howard Rice Valleyford

Private family service for Howard G. Rice, will be held. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rice, 75, died Feb. 8. He was born in Corinth, Miss.

He was an electrical engineer and had lived in Priest Lake, Idaho, and Spokane.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Solomon Rice; his mother, Floyd Rice; one daughter, Lynda Giebel; two sons, Daniel and Grant Rice; one brother, Charles Rice; one sister, Jayne Bailor; and three grandsons.

Mabel Holmes Spokane

No service will be held for Mabel Garnett Holmes. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Emden, Mo., Mrs. Holmes died Sunday. She was 89.

She graduated from Missouri State Teachers College with a major in home economics and taught in Arizona, Idaho, Montana and Inchelium, Wash.

She had lived in Spokane since 1966.

She was a member of the Washington State Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma educators fraternity.

Two husbands, Robert Kaiser and Wallace Holmes, preceded her in death.

Survivors include nieces, nephews and cousins.
