‘Explorers Of America’ Essayists Recognized
The Esther Reed Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution recently presented awards to several Inland Northwest students as winning essayists on “Explorers of America.”
Rachel Lolie, took first place for the fifth grade. David Gaines and Kezia Bellamy tied for second place. All three students are from Blair Elementary.
Taking first place for the sixth-grade division was Bobby Ray, Davenport (Wash.) Elementary; placing second was Luke Anderson, also of Davenport Elementary.
Clarissa Neher, Garry Middle School, took first place for the seventh-grade division.
Jennifer Chandler, a sixth-grade student at Davenport Elementary, submitted the best illustrated essay.
Christopher Knight, 18, received a $500 Debut Performing Arts Scholarship for his demonstration of martial arts and solos on the trumpet and guitar. He is a student at Rogers High School.
Chad Hansberry was selected to serve for one week as a Legislative Page in Olympia. Hansberry, 15, son of Alice and Joel Hansberry of Spokane, is a student at Ferris High School.
John Morey Maurice, a professor at Gonzaga University’s School of Law, has been elected president of the Federal Defenders of Eastern Washington and Idaho, a non-profit community legal defender organization, with offices in Yakima, Spokane and Boise.
Maurice is director of the Thomas More Scholarship Program and Continuing Legal Education, and chairman of the New Law School Building Committee. He is also a member of the Spokane Civil Service Commission and president of the Inland Empire Association of Phi Beta Kappa.
