Gu’s Hertz Wins No. 500

The Gonzaga University baseball team split a doubleheader against Washington in Seattle on Sunday, helping coach Steve Hertz earn his 500th career win.

GU won the first game 16-6 before falling 9-3 in the nightcap. Hertz’s career record is 500-473.

In the opener, GU overcame a 6-2 deficit by scoring 14 unanswered runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Donnie Murrell, Brendan Hare and Kevin Workman each hit home runs.

UW used an eight-run seventh inning to win the second game.

Kevin Moore drove in four runs with a pair of doubles and two singles as Long Beach State handed Washington State one of the worst losses in school baseball history, a 19-0 shutout at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif.

Women’s basketball

In Seattle, Jamila Wideman scored 27 points as No. 4 Stanford (22-2, 15-0) clinched the Pac-10 Conference title by beating Washington 59-54.

Wideman hit a 3-pointer with the shot clock expiring that put Stanford ahead for good at 55-52 with 1:20 remaining. Stanford extended its Pac-10 record of consecutive conference games won to 24.
