Helen Nelson Coeur d’Alene

Service for Helen Brooks Nelson, 83, will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow in he Veterans of Foreign Wars section of Forest Cemetery.

Mrs. Nelson, a lifetime Coeur d’Alene resident, died Sunday.

She was born in Coeur d’Alene and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Nelson enjoyed her family and friends, flowers and music. She was a member of the Walnut Chapel in Coeur d’Alene and was active in politics for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Helmer, in 1975.

Survivors include a son, Allen Nelson of Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Mary LeCain of Missoula; 27 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Edward Heyn Coeur d’Alene

Service for Edward Heyn, 85, was held Monday.

Mr. Heyn, a lifelong Coeur d’Alene resident, died Friday.

He began working for the Forest Service at the age of 19. He was the Kootenai County assessor in the 1930s and also worked at the Huetter sawmill.

Mr. Heyn was a lifelong Democrat and enjoyed gardening and the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wreathel, in 1993. Survivors include two nephews, Loren Heyn of Valleyford and Donald Heyn of California; and two nieces, Dorothy Holman of Maple Valley, Wash., and Maryann Chandler of Seattle.

Nettie Shriner Richland

Graveside service for Nettie Elizabeth Shriner, 87, was held Monday. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shriner, who was born in Bonesteel, S.D., died Thursday.

In 1934 she moved to the Rockford Bay area, where she farmed. She later became a cook for sorority houses in Moscow, Idaho, and Pullman before retiring in 1973.

She moved to Bothell, Wash., where she ran a day-care center before moving to West Richland, Wash., to be near her daughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Charles, in 1967. Survivors include two sons, Rodney Shriner of Coeur d’Alene and Gerald Shriner of Juneau, Alaska; a daughter, Deloras Sullivan of West Richland; a sister, Ruth Musch of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother, John Millspaugh of Malden, Wash.; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Jessie Peightal Spokane

Service for Jessie M. Peightal, 87, was Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial was at Greenwood Memorial Terrace Cemetery.

Born in Lowry City, Mo., Mrs. Peightal died Thursday.

She had lived in Spokane for more than 42 years and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Richard, in 1989.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Peightal of Post Falls and Marvin “Pete” Peightal of Bayview, Idaho; two daughters, Donna Billeter of Spokane and Janet Hyatt of Auburn, Wash.; one brother, Lester Winn of Frenchtown, Mont.; two sisters, Ruby Wicklund of Seattle and Doris Johnson of Spokane; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Jack McCullough Spokane

Visitation for F.J. “Jack” McCullough, 85, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Service is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. McCullough, who died Friday, was born in Wenatchee.

He had lived in Spokane since 1941 and worked as a meat cutter for Safeway, Dean Street Market, IGA in Greenacres and URM. He also operated a meat block resurfacing business. He resurfaced meat blocks for restaurants and meat markets throughout Eastern Washington and Idaho.

Mr. McCullough is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bernice McCullough; one son, Donald McCullough of Loon Lake, Wash.; one brother, Claude McCullough of Leavenworth, Wash.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Raymond Smith Smelterville, Idaho

Funeral Mass for Raymond I. Smith, 74, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kellogg. Burial will follow at Shoshone Memorial Gardens in Pinehurst, Idaho. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith, who was born in Darby, Mont., died Saturday.

He was a World War II veteran and moved to the Silver Valley after his military discharge in 1945.

Mr. Smith worked as a miner for Asarco at the Galena and Page mines. He had also worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Silver Valley.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Osburn Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1675 and was active in the soup kitchen at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie.

Survivors include two sons, Joe Eixenberger of Kellogg and Tom Eixenberger of California; six daughters, Tammie Brown of Smelterville, Bernice Rosenthal of Post Falls, Arlene Howell of Careywood, Idaho, Judy Minson of Spokane, Rita Conklin of Missoula and Peggy Daugherty of Cataldo; two sisters, Mary Lou McCombs of Nine Mile Falls and Violet McAlpine of Mountain Home, Idaho; and 27 grandchildren.

Robert Rutten Coeur d’Alene

Service for Robert L. “Bob” Rutten, 71, will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Rutten, a lifelong Coeur d’Alene resident, died Sunday of complications from a stroke.

He attended schools in Coeur d’Alene and served with the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Rutten later built Rutten’s Thrift Store in Hayden Lake, Idaho, which he operated for several years before beginning a career as a mechanic.

He operated Rutten’s Automotive from the mid-1970s until last year.

Mr. Rutten enjoyed flying, boating, driving and competitive small-bore rifle competition.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Dorothy; a son, Robert Rutten of Spokane; a daughter, Deborah Stilkey of Post Falls; a sister, Phyllis Ereaux of Hayden Lake; and two grandchildren.

Leona Langlois Spokane

Funeral Mass for Leona Grace (Kuch) Langlois, 85, was Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Born in Dubuque, Iowa, Mrs. Langlois died Wednesday.

She moved to Spokane in 1927 and had worked as a manager at Johnston’s, the Coffee Man and Greenough’s.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Altar Society, the Lady Elks, Greater Gonzaga Guild, and The Spokane Club and was an associate member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Her husband, Milton Langlois, died in 1978.

She is survived by two sons, Dale Langlois of Sagle, Idaho, and Milton Langlois of Spokane; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Catholic School or Morning Star Boys Ranch.

Evelyn Stigall Spokane

Memorial service for Evelyn Louise Stigall, 76, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Grace Baptist Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stigall, who died Thursday, was born in Spokane.

She lived most of her life in Spokane and spent several years in Cusick, Wash., and Oregon.

She was a homemaker and was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.

Her husband, Leonard Stigall, preceded her in death.

She is is survived by three sons, Don Solberg of Spokane, Michael Valley of Richland and Stephen Valley of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one brother, Alvin Espe of Dallas, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren

Edward Dodd Spokane

Service for Edward F. Dodd, 69, was Monday at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Dodd, who died Friday, was born in Petrolia, Texas.

He had lived in Spokane for 26 years and worked as a parts manager at Center Ford, now known as Empire Ford. He retired in 1992.

He served in the Army during World War II and was a prisoner of war. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1471.

He was a member of Eagles Lodge 2 and within the lodge acted as treasurer and trustee. He was also a member of the Eagles Ritual Team, the Nut Nut Club and the Eagles 25 Club.

Mr. Dodd is survived by his wife of 15 years, Judy Dodd; two sons, Charles Dodd of Fort Worth, Texas, and Ronnie Dodd of Dallas; one stepson, Douglas Scyphers of Spokane; three stepdaughters, Kristene Kephart of Spokane, and Dawn Ann Tipke and Trudy Dodd, both of Seattle; two brothers, R.T. Dodd of Wichita Falls, Texas, and John Dodd of Tyler, Texas; three sisters, Mildred Burnham of West Covina, Calif., Frankie Thompson of Dallas and Olita Garner of Wichita Falls; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eagles Lodge No. 2 Heart Fund or Cancer Fund.

Katherine Larson Spokane

Service for Katherine Larson, 88, is planned for 10 a.m. today at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Larson, who died Thursday at home, was born in Pittsburgh.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 78 years.

Her husband of 60 years, Victor Larson, died in 1992.

Mrs. Larson is survived by one son, Robert Larson of Hood River, Ore.; three daughters, Ruth Larson of Portland, Irene Wesel of Hillsboro, Ore., and Ellen Brown of Spokane; two sisters, Violet Bruno of Gladstone, Ore., and Irene Jensen of Spokane; seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

David Taylor Yakima

Memorial service for David E. Taylor, 83, will be at 10 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mr. Taylor, a former Spokane resident, died Wednesday. He was born in Kooskia, Idaho.

He served in the Army during World War II. After his discharge he worked for the Forest Service.

He operated a barber shop in Spokane for many years and moved to Yakima in 1994.

His wife, Ethel Taylor, died in 1971.

Survivors include one stepson, Roger Taylor of Saudi Arabia.

Jeffery King Spokane

Memorial Mass for Jeffrey S. “Jeff” King, 31, is set for 11 a.m. today at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. King, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Thursday from cardiac arrest.

He graduated from Jantsch High School and worked as a certified nursing assistant in nursing homes.

He was a member of the Catholic Church and New Hope Training Center.

Mr. King is survived by his father, Raymond King of Spokane; one sister, Terri Troyer, and one brother, Bruce King, both of Spokane; and his grandmother, Mae King of Spokane.

Lucile Lighthall Spokane

Memorial service for Lucile R. Lighthall, 91, was Monday at Maplewood Gardens.

Mrs. Lighthall, who was born in Pine Bluff, Ark., died Friday.

She had lived in Spokane for 48 years and was a homemaker.

She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Lighthall’s husband of 63 years, Clayton Lighthall, died in 1987.

She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Ryon of Spokane; and two grandsons.

Donald Sturdevant Spokane

Service for Donald Lewis “Don” Sturdevant, 53, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Sturdevant, who was born in Spokane, died of cancer Saturday at home.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and served in the Navy from 1962 until 1966, during the Vietnam War.

From 1966 to 1984 he worked for Pacific Northwest Bell. He most recently had been employed as a phone technician with AT&T.

He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and Independent Order of Foresters and served as a deacon at Shadle Park Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Kay Sturdevant; three daughters, Kathy Smith and Marie Olesen, both of Spokane, and Debbie Brittain of Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters, Dorothy Sturdevant of Seattle and Randee Tennison of Spokane; and four grandsons.

Russell Pankey Davenport, Wash.

Service for C. Russell Pankey, 66, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Davenport. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Davenport. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pankey died Wednesday in El Centro, Calif., where he and his wife spent the winter months.

He was born in Spokane and graduated from high school in Davenport in 1948. He married Mary “Marilee” Maclin in Davenport in 1950.

Mr. Pankey worked for the Lincoln County Road Department and retired in 1989.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Acacia Masonic Lodge No. 58, Scottish Rite, El Katif Shrine, Sage Shrine Club, the North Star Grange, and the Harrington Golf and Country Club.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Candy Davis of Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, Jim Pankey of Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and Rod Pankey of Olympia; and 10 grandchildren.
