Chiefs’ Sinclair Being Considered For Three Awards
Darren Sinclair is the Spokane Chiefs’ nominee for three Western Hockey League awards, including WHL player of the year.
The 19-year-old center and alternate captain from Brooks, Alberta, leads the Chiefs in game-winning goals with nine. Assigned to the opposition’s top centerman every night, Sinclair has compiled career highs in goals (30) and assists (40) while helping the Chiefs limit the opposition to a WHL-low 201 goals .
Sinclair, who in November signed a free-agent contract with the NHL Vancouver Canucks, is also the club’s nominee for the league’s most sportsmanlike player. He has 50 penalty minutes in 64 games after Tuesday night’s 6-1 victory at Prince George.
Nominees from the WHL’s 16 other clubs will also be considered for the Four Bronocs Memorial Trophy, presented to the WHL player of the year.
Sinclair is one of seven nominees for WHL West Division player of the year, with Jarome Iginla, Kamloops; Robb Gordon, Kelowna; Richard Zednik, Portland; Chris Mason, Prince George; Patrick Marleau, Seattle; and Brian Boucher of Tri-City.
The Chiefs moved up a spot to fourth this week in the major junior hockey poll. The Prince Albert Raiders, second last week, are now the top-ranked club in the Canadian Hockey League that includes the Western, Ontario and Quebec leagues.
