Try Your Pen At Composing A Little Peace

People these days think kids know how to solve conflict only with violence. The Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane would like to prove that theory wrong.

In its eighth annual Compose Peace Essay Contest, PJALS continues to give teens ages 14 through 18 a chance to write about an issue involving a conflict that personally affects or concerns them. The contest is called “Seeing Wholes, Trashing Walls.”

The essays can be written by individuals or teams and should explain the conflict in detail from the perspectives of the different sides. Writers then should explain how they would resolve the conflict. Some examples of topics are racism in school, sex education, teen rights, curfews, etc.

Cash prizes will be awarded to first through third place winners in two categories. Plus, you’ll get free CDs from KAEP, The Peak. Winning essays also will be shared with the Chase Youth Commission.

There are other rules and guidelines. Check in your school office for details or call PJALS at 838-7870. The deadline is March 15.

Girls only: Spokane Falls Community College is hosting the annual “Expanding Your Horizons” Math and Science Careers Conference on March 23, open to sixth through 12th grade girls.

The conference provides successful women role models - surgeons, pilots, architects, engineers and more - to tell of their professions and discuss the importance of math and science education.

Registration deadline is March 4. See your school’s math teachers or counselors for a registration brochure, or call 245-3518.

Sorry guys: Blue Jean Magazine: For Teen Girls Who Dare is a new publication seeking submissions from teen girls all over the country. Editors started the mag to counter the media portrayal of women and the unrealistic standards of beauty placed on women and girls.

“You’ll find no supermodels, tips on dieting or fashion spreads,” says the publisher. “We publish teen girl submissions of poetry, artwork, photography, fiction and more.”
