Obituaries

Chester Funk Spokane

Memorial service for Chester L. Funk, 77, will be at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Baptist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Private inurnment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Funk, who died Sunday at home, was born in Nebraska.

He served in the Navy during World War II and in the Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from the Air Force in 1963 as a senior master sergeant and moved to Spokane.

He worked for Spokane Pres-to-Log Inc. for 18 years and retired in 1982.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign War Post 51 and volunteered at the Veterans Affairs Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Funk; three daughters, Gayle Estes of Spokane, Stella Butler of Hillsboro, Ore., and Penny Hiebert of Colville, Wash.; one brother, Claude Funk of Warrenburg, Mo.; one sister, Virginia Savage of Portland; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Baptist Church or Hospice of Spokane.

Audrey Garcia Spokane

Visitation for Audrey M. Garcia, 54, is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with burial at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Garcia, who died Sunday, was born in St. Paul, Minn.

She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Post 6 Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1471 Ladies Auxiliary.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 44 years.

She is survived by her husband, Felix Garcia II; two sons, David and Felix Garcia III, both of Spokane; one daughter, Mary-Jo Johnson of Reno, Nev.; her mother, Kathleen Smith of Seattle; her stepfather, Irving Vance of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Jeffrey King Spokane

Memorial Mass for Jeffrey S. “Jeff” King, 31, was Tuesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

Mr. King, a lifetime Spokane resident, died last Thursday of cardiac arrest.

He graduated from Jantsch High School and worked as a certified nursing assistant in nursing homes.

He was a member of the Catholic Church and New Hope Training Center.

Mr. King is survived by his father, Raymond King of Spokane; one sister, Terri Troyer, and one brother, Bruce King, both of Spokane; and his grandmother, Mae King of Spokane.

Frederick Sherwood White Swan, Wash.

Funeral Mass for Frederick Sherwood, 80, is set for 10 a.m. today at Spokane Tribal Longhouse in Wellpinit, Wash. Inurnment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wellpinit. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sherwood, a lifetime Wellpinit resident, died Tuesday at home.

He married Clara Seltice in 1934.

He served in the Army during World War II. He worked as a logger and was a member of the Spokane Tribe of Indians.

His wife, Clara Sherwood, died in 1984.

He is survived by one sister, Marie Samuels of Wellpinit; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Sarah Carter Newport, Wash.

Graveside service for Sarah Carter, 78, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Newport Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangement.

Mrs. Carter, a 16-year Newport resident, died Monday at a care center in Spokane. She was born in Terry, Mont.

She moved to Newport from Portland in 1980.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Her survivors include three sons, Gerald Carter of Boise, Ron Carter of Richmond, Ind., and Garrie Carter of Bentonville, Ark.; two daughters, Connie Miller of Portland and Victoria Carter of Wichita, Kan.; one sister, Minnie Wageman of Newport; one brother, Ernest Schaak of Spokane; and nine grandchildren.

Bill Johnson Spokane

Visitation for Bill H. Johnson, 78, will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Service will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Johnson died Tuesday.

He graduated from Rogers High School and Washington State University and received a master’s degree. He worked as a chemist for United Paint and Coatings and later worked for Jones and Porter Paint Co. He retired from Columbia Paint.

He served in the Army during World War II.

His wife, Adelaide, died in 1974.

Survivors include two sons, Warren and Peter Johnson, both of Spokane; two daughters, Barbara Johnson and Jenny Jeffries, both of Spokane; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Mona Potvin Spokane

Graveside service for Mona C. Potvin, 58, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Potvin, who was born in Missoula, died Friday.

She graduated from Rogers High School and worked as a nurses’ aide at nursing homes.

She had lived in Spokane for 51 years and was a guardian for Job’s Daughters, Bethel 7.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Robert “Bud” Potvin; five children, Dale, Drew and Dana Potvin, Kelly Ali and Roberta Choquette; her mother, Ruby Irvine; one brother, Freddie Matthews; one sister, Dorothy Powell; and 17 grandchildren.

Herman Libby Spokane

Memorial service for Herman A. Libby, 70, is planned for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Park Place Retirement Community. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Libby, who died Jan. 29, was born in Elmore, Ill.

He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

He retired from civil service as a steam plant operator at Fairchild Air Force Base in 1985 after 30 years.

He had lived in Spokane for more than 45 years.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 51 and the Retired Army Corps of Engineers.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Virginia; three sons, Delwin Libby of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Darrell and Daniel Libby, both of Spokane; two sisters, Judy and Mary, both of Illinois; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Robert ‘Curley’ Hudlow Moses Lake

Memorial service for Robert Edmond “Curley” Hudlow, 91, will at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Moses Lake Assembly of God Church. Kayser’s Chapel of Memories in Moses Lake is in charge of arrangements.

Born on Pleasant Prairie in the foothills of Mount Spokane, Mr. Hudlow died Sunday.

He married Maxine Sherman in Libby, Mont., in 1945.

In 1955 they moved from Spokane to Moses Lake, where he operated Hudlow’s Janitorial Service. He retired in 1969.

His first wife, Libby Peterson, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine; one son, Robert Hudlow; four daughters, Wanda Routh, Laura Louise Sparks, Gail Johnson and Susan Hudlow-Campbell; one stepdaughter, Carol Paczynski; 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

John Kuster Washtucna, Wash.

Memorial service for John Ira Kuster, a lifetime Washtucna resident, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Washtucna Community Church. Private burial will precede at Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in Washtucna. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kuster, 73, died Tuesday.

He graduated from high school in Washtucna in 1941 and served in the Army from 1942 to 1945.

In 1946 he married Iva Jo Hollenback.

He worked on a farm in Washtucna, and in 1959 he started Washtucna Farm Chemicals. He sold his business to Cenex 10 years later and continued to work there for more than 15 years. He retired in 1985.

He was a member of the Washtucna Lions Club, Lions International, and Washtucna Community Church.

Mr. Kuster is survived by his wife; two sons, Gary Kuster of Pasco and Dale Kuster of Ritzville; one daughter, Joni Plager of Ritzville; two foster sons, Tony Williams of Anchorage, Alaska, and Carl Blauert of Moses Lake; one sister, Elsie Snyder of Spokane; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Washtucna Emergency Medical Technicians or to the Lions Eye Bank.

Una Lois Burris Spokane

At her request no service will be held for Una Lois Burris. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Burris, 83, died Saturday.

She was born in Newburg, N.D.

She was a schoolteacher and taught in California for more than 40 years. She moved to Spokane 10 years ago.

She is survived by one son, James Burris of Spokane; and two grandsons.

Ruth Drobny Spokane

No service will be held for A. Ruth Drobny, 80. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Drobny, a 37-year Spokane resident, died Sunday. She was born in Albion, Neb.

She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Drobny is is survived by her husband of 54 years, Joseph Drobny; twin sons, Randolph Drobny of Bellevue, Wash., and Richard Drobny of Seattle; one sister, Tammy Berthelsen of Chicago; and two grandchildren.
