New Windsock Store Caters To Just About Any Whim
Whether you have a passion for golfing, fishing or baseball, whether you like cowboys, Santa, elves or pilgrims, David White has a windsock for you.
The colorful and detailed windsocks are the staple of his new store, Windstock, in the Whitworth Mall, 9916 N. Waikiki Road.
With more than 140 different designs, White claims to be the only store solely devoted to windsocks in all of Spokane.
He’s got every kind of flower, as well as frogs, cats, cows, dogs, pigs, fish, monsters and flags.
A graduate of Shadle Park High School, the 41-year-old White admits the corner mall at Waikiki and Whitworth Drive is an odd place for his business.
“We’re kind of in the middle of nowhere, but we’re here,” he said.
White searches for the very best designs and acknowledges some of his products are pricey - his favorite windsock of Old Man Winter with a pink face and a beard sells for almost $50.
Going into a mall as large as NorthTown would have increased the cost more than he thinks Spokane can afford.
“This is a spendy product already,” he said.
The smaller Whitworth Mall exposes him to some of Spokane’s more affluent neighborhoods, where there might be a market for the socks. He’s been open six months.
White said he also plans to market the windsocks on the Internet.
Passerbys can’t help but notice some of the windsocks as White has them fluttering along the right-of-way of Waikiki.
“People will drive by for months before stopping in,” he said.
