Little Pine Hutch Perfect For Smaller Home Spaces
This little pine hutch, also known as a Welsh cabinet, is perfect for homes with a limited amount of space for displaying china, crystal and other attractive collectibles. Even though it stands only about 5 feet tall, 2 feet wide and 11 inches deep, it provides plenty of room on three-tiered shelves, with extra storage in two drawers and a bottom compartment.
The project has other advantages: it can be built inexpensively and simply. Three 12-foot-long pieces of 1-by-12 knotty pine lumber are enough for the entire cabinet, including the drawers and door. The only other materials required are two hinges and a latch for the door, 65 flathead wood screws, sandpaper and glue.
The project uses only 14 pieces in all, plus the drawers and door, and the curved pieces are traced from full-size patterns. After sawing and sanding the pieces, assemble the upper and lower sections separately using screws and glue. Then place the upper section into position and screw the back boards into place. Build the drawers and door and apply stain, paint or finish.
The average do-it-yourselfer will need only a day or two to complete the project.
The Welsh Cabinet plan, No. 141, is $6.95 and includes full-size traceable patterns, assembly instructions, detailed drawings and a shopping list.
A package of four hutch plans, No. C26, is available for $12.50 and includes this plan plus plans for a buffet hutch and two different corner cabinets. Prices include postage and handling (for first-class mail, add $1 per item up to $3 maximum).
