Dorothy (Stevens) Ferrier Seattle

Memorial service for Dorothy Jane (Stevens) Ferrier, 85, was Dec. 27 at East Shore Unitarian Church in Bellevue, Wash.

Mrs. Ferrier, a former Spokane resident, died Dec. 23.

She was born in Headly, British Columbia.

She lived in Spokane from 1930 until 1980 and then spent time in Coeur d’Alene and East Wenatchee before moving to Everett in 1989. She had lived in Seattle for the past year and a half.

She was an honorary member of the Spokane Mountaineers. She and her husband and family helped build the chalet on Mount Spokane.

Her husband, Earl Ferrier, died in 1989.

She is survived by three sons, Jeffrey Ferrier of San Jose, Calif., Christopher Ferrier of Marysville, Wash., and Gordon Ferrier of Duvall, Wash.; one daughter, Jane Adams of Cupertino, Calif.; three sisters, Marjorie Kromholtz of Spokane, Eleanor Youngs of Buckley, Wash., and Olivia Luethe of Bremerton; two brothers, William Stevens of Princeton, British Columbia, and Robert Stevens of Bryant, British Columbia; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary Esther Rauscher Spokane

Service for Mary Esther Rauscher, 73, was Saturday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, where she was a member. Burial was at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rauscher, who died Dec. 27, was born in Chicago.

She had lived in Spokane for 43 years and was a retired School District 81 teacher. She had also worked for the Postal Service in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Mrs. Rauscher taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Her husband of 31 years, Theodore Rauscher, died in 1976.

She is survived by four sons, Ted Rauscher of Anaconda, Mont., John and Jim Rauscher, both of Spokane, and Daniel Rauscher of Yakima; two daughters, Linda Babcock of Spokane and Debra Sweeny of Liberty Lake; one brother, Bill McGuinness of California; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Marjorie Broderick Colville, Wash.

Service for Marjorie Broderick, 91, will be held at 11 a.m. today at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colville. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Colville. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Broderick, who was born in Fulda, Minn., died Tuesday.

She graduated from Colville High School and worked as a private secretary for government agencies in charge of military supplies.

After retiring in 1969, she moved to Los Angeles and returned to Spokane in 1972. She had lived at Pinewood Terrace for almost 10 years.

Miss Broderick’s survivors include 15 nieces and nephews.

Burl Berry Spokane

No service will be held for Burl A. Berry, 86, at her request. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Berry, who was born in Monroe, Wash., died Saturday.

She graduated from Sultan (Wash.) High School.

She had lived in Spokane since 1984 and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Frank Berry, died in 1966.

Survivors include two daughters, Irene Frazier of Spokane and Joyce Johnson of Prince George, British Columbia; one sister, Lillian Heater of Seattle; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Alvin Holz Valley, Wash.

Service for Alvin E. Holz, 71, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah, Wash. Burial will follow at Valley Cemetery, Valley, Wash.

Mr. Holz, who was born in Bellingham, died Tuesday.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Holz; a son, Ed Holz of Waitts Lake, Wash.; two daughters, Dawn Dawson of Waitts Lake and Terry Wilks of Valley; his mother, Irene Holz of Bellingham; one brother, Leo Holz of Deming, Wash.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Rev. Walter Nieuwenhuis Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Service for the Rev. Walter Herman Nieuwenhuis, 87, is today at 1 p.m. at the Bonners Ferry Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry.

Mr. Nieuwenhuis, who was born in Avon, S.D., died Saturday.

He received his education in South Dakota and married Leona Ladely in 1936. He later attended the Faith Home Bible School in Mitchell, S.D.

Mr. Nieuwenhuis farmed and worked part time as a minister until becoming a Nazarene minister in 1947. He served Nazarene churches in South Dakota, Montana, North Dakota and Idaho.

He moved to Bonners Ferry in 1967 and served as the pastor of the Free Methodist Church until retiring in 1975.

He moved to Kootenai County, where he lived until his wife died in 1983.

He married Muriel Anderson in Montana in 1985. He moved to North Dakota in 1991 and to Sandpoint in 1992.

His second wife died in 1993.

He returned to Bonners Ferry in 1995 and lived in the E.F.C. wing of Community Hospital.

Mr. Nieuwenhuis enjoyed gardening, fishing and his ministry.

Survivors include a son, Myron Nieuwenhuis of Deer Park; a brother, Burnell of Nebraska; four sisters, Margaret Hubner and Evelyn Utterbeck, both of South Dakota, Nellie McIntyre of British Columbia, and Florence McIntyre of Kansas; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

William Rosenau Spokane

Visitation for William F. Rosenau, 83, is scheduled from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Rosenau, who died Sunday, was born in North Dakota.

He was a 66-year Spokane resident and worked for White Pine Sash from 1931 until 1965. He worked for Boise Cascade from 1966 until 1970 and for Anderson-Miller Manufacturing for seven years. He retired in 1977.

His wife, Iola, died in 1973.

Survivors include two sons, Lester and Lyle Rosenau, both of Spokane; three daughters, Verniece Anderson of Grantsville, Utah, and Vera Wingett and Linda Leigh, both of Spokane; one brother, Raymond Rosenau of Spokane; four sisters, Bonnie Bristow of Prineville, Ore., and Helen Rosenau, Lillian Humes and Ruth Vierth, all of Spokane; 17 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Marie Sage Spokane

Service for Marie E. Sage, 85, is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Meyers Cemetery, Kettle Falls, Wash.

Mrs. Sage, born in Holton, Wis., died Tuesday.

She moved to Kettle Falls at the age of 13. She married Guy David Sage in 1943. In 1959 they moved from Colville, Wash., to Spokane, where she was employed at Hawthorne Manor until she retired at age 79.

Her husband died in 1962.

Her survivors include two sons, David Sage, Newark, Calif., and John Sage, Cheney; and two daughters, Kathleen Noll, Spokane and Janet Peterson, Kettle Falls.

Larvel Olsen Spokane

A memorial service for Larvel D. “Larry” Olsen, 75, will be held at a later date.

Melcher Funeral Home, Mesa, Ariz., is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Olsen, born in Jamestown, N.D., died Dec. 24th, while on vacation in Mesa.

In 1939 he moved to Spokane, where he was employed at US West Communications for 42 years.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Olsen was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and St. Peters Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Joene Olsen; one son, Rodney Olsen of Malverne, Pa.; one daughter, Patty Resseman of Colbert; two stepdaughters Dawnell Greene of Dallas and Barbara Plymate of Vancouver, Wash.; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Arthur Hotchkiss Chewelah, Wash.

Services for Arthur W. Hotchkiss, 85, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Chewelah Free Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Mountain View Park Cemetery, Colville, Wash. Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hotchkiss, who was born in Colville, died Tuesday.

He was a minister in the Free Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille; two sons, Dave Hotchkiss of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Dan Hotchkiss of Sunnyside, Wash.; one brother, Vern Hotchkiss of Colville, Wash.; three sisters, Margaret Hotchkiss and Gladys Stewart, both of Colville, and Marie Yates of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Lloyd Schmick Colfax, Wash.

Service for Lloyd W. Schmick, 66, is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Peace Lutheran Church in Colfax. Private burial will precede at Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schmick, who was born in Endicott, Wash., died Dec. 28 at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.

He graduated from high school in Colfax and from Washington State University.

He married Kathleen LaDow in Spokane in 1951, and they lived in Everett for two years before returning to the Colfax area to farm. He also worked as a welder for the McGregor Co. for many years.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, the Colfax Elks Lodge, Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, Colfax Golf Club, Colfax Jaycees, the Cougar Club, and Crimson and Gray. He was on the board of Mockonema Elevator and was commissioner for the Diamond Fire District.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; three sons, Kirk and Gary Schmick, both of Spokane, and Jim Schmick of Cambodia; one daughter, Mary Shaw of Colfax; one brother, Don Schmick of Colfax; three sisters, Edith Benner of Spokane, Dorothy Nicley of Vancouver, Wash., and Lorraine Beardemphl of Edmonds, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Peace Lutheran Church or the the Whitman Community Hospital Foundation.

Charles O’Leary Colville, Wash.

Memorial service for Charles A. O’Leary, 81, is scheduled at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Colville. Danekas Funeral Chapel of Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. O’Leary, a 17-year Colville resident, died Dec. 27 at home. He was born in Lancaster, Pa.

He served in the Army during World War II as an Alaskan scout. He later worked as a snow ranger for the Forest Service in Alaska.

In 1972 he married Beverley Kellogg in Anchorage, Alaska. They moved to Colville in 1979.

He was a member of the National Ski Patrol, 49 Degrees North Ski Patrol, the Frank Starr American Legion Post in Colville, and St. John’s Episcopal Church.

His wife, Beverley, died in 1984.

Survivors include his former wife, Margaret O’Leary of Federal Way, Wash.; three sons, Michael O’Leary of Cordova, Alaska, John O’Leary of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Patrick O’Leary of Federal Way; three daughters, Marie Davis of Milton, Wash., Marjorie Schmidt of Anchorage and Mary Lou Amidon of Mercer Island, Wash.; one sister, Rita Davis of Coco Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Archie Erickson Spokane

Service for Archie Sigurd Erickson, 80, was Tuesday at Sunset Chapel at Fairmont.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Erickson died Dec. 28.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and served with the Army.

He retired from Silver Loaf Baking Co. after 33 years.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Muriel; one daughter, Cheryl Wilson of Dixon, Calif.; three sons, Stanley Erickson of Seattle, and David and Arthur Erickson, both of Spokane; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mary Lou (Wittkopf) Anthony Spokane

Service for Mary Lou (Wittkopf) Anthony, 45, is planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Born in Spokane, Mrs. Anthony died Sunday from cancer.

She graduated from Rogers High School and received an education degree from Eastern Washington University.

She taught at Bemiss Elementary for 12 years and left in April due to her health.

Mrs. Anthony was a member of the Washington Education Association.

Survivors include her husband of 21 years, Richard Anthony; her mother, Audrey Wittkopf of Spokane; two daughters, Allison and Lisa Anthony, both at home; four sisters, Cheryl Staley, Dixie Mize, and Susan Bruneau, all of Spokane, and Nancy Kaelber of Kennewick.

Howard Johnson Electric City, Wash.

Memorial service for Howard M. Johnson, 81, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Strate Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Coulee.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Almira, Wash. died Tuesday.

He farmed in the Almira area for many years and also worked as a carpenter.

He married Naomi Whiting in 1973.

He was a member of the Coulee Dam Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Johnson’s survivors include his wife; two sons, Steve of Hollister, Calif., and Scott of Spokane; one daughter, Sandra Quirk of Almira; two stepdaughters, Diane Novotney of Phoenix, Ariz., and Dorothy Boyd of Lone Pine, Calif.; two stepsons, Roger Williams of Bellevue, Wash., and Fred Manzer of Sequim, Wash.; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Lavone ‘Von’ Walt Spokane

Memorial service for Lavone “Von” Walt, 77, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Walt, who died Dec. 28, was born in Kramer, N.D.

She had worked as a waitress in the restaurant at The Bon Marche for many years and retired in 1983.

She was a 37-year Spokane resident.

Mrs. Walt is survived by one daughter, Candace Dahl of Spokane; one son, Gary Dahl of Los Gatos, Calif.; two brothers, Olaf and Clifford Ferm, both of Spokane; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Cox Coeur d’Alene

Service for Mary E. “Betty” Cox, 71, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Spokane. Yates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cox, who was born in Portland, died Wednesday.

She grew up in Portland and moved to Spokane in 1950 and to Coeur d’Alene in 1973.

Mrs. Cox was an avid doll collector and had served as an elder and deacon at First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Robert; son, Robert Cox of Ridgefield, Wash.; four daughters, Cathryn Cox of Pullman, Carol Dorsey of Harrison, Idaho, Janet Allison of Edmonds, Wash., and Joan Schooler of Olympia; sister, Dorothy Schultz of Portland; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Owen Morrison St. John, Wash.

Memorial graveside service for Owen A. Morrison, 88, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. John Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home, Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Morrison, who was born in Newcastle, Wyo., died Wednesday.

In 1955 he and his family moved to St. John, where he helped establish a herd of registered Angus cattle. He later moved to Lamont, Wash., and returned to St. John in 1981.

He was a member of the American Angus Breeders Association and a volunteer with 4-H and Future Farmers of America members.

Survivors include his wife, Roma Morrison; three sons, Dale Morrison of Burbank, Wash., Leland Morrison of Irene, S.D., and Don Morrison of Evansville, Wyo; two daughters, Reta Hornbeck of St. John and Monna Mills of Oakesdale, Wash.; two sisters, Ruby Mann of Newcastle, Wyo., and Ruth Taylor of Seattle; 13 grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

Gilbert Doddridge Spokane

Graveside service for Gilbert W. Doddridge, 50, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Doddridge, a Spokane resident for 15 years, died Dec. 28.

He served in the Marines for four years and worked for TransAmerica Land Title Co. as a title officer.

He a member of the Sierra Club.

Survivors include his father, William Doddridge of San Diego; and one sister, Verda Baltzer of Lakewood, Calif.

Leonard Miller Jr. Spokane

No service will be held for Leonard W. “Lenny” Miller Jr., 43, at his family’s request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Miller, who died Dec. 27, was born in Tacoma.

He had lived in Spokane for 15 years and was superintendent for Lance Pounder Excavation.

He is survived by his father, Leonard Miller Sr. of Tacoma; three sons, Michael, Shawn and Derek; one sister, Audrey Tarbox of Coos Bay, Ore.; his companion, Nancy McCabe; three brothers, Bob Miller, Rick Tillett and Ron Walter; and one grandson.

Carl Baker Odessa, Wash.

No services for Carl C. Baker, 90, will be held, at his request. Strate Funeral Home, Odessa, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Baker, who was born in Binger, Okla., died Tuesday.

He worked for the federal Bureau of Reclamation until his retirement in the late 1970s.

He was a member of the Moses Lake Elks.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Baker; one daughter, Karla Sue Lapsley of Martinez, Calif.; one son, John David Baker of Pasco; five stepchildren, Marvin Greenwalt of Odessa, Judith Greenwalt of Harrington, Wash., Sally Romo of Reardan, Wash., William Greenwalt of Cheney, and Charles Dahm of Spokane; one brother, Don Baker of West Fork, Ariz.; one sister, Oma Nesary of Port Isabel, Texas; five grandchildren, two great-grandsons, and numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Marine Kivle Spokane

No services are being held for Marine M. Kivle. Hazen and Jaeger Valley is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Kivle, 78, died Dec. 27.

She was born in Thief River Falls, Minn., and was a 15-year resident of Spokane.

Her husband Selmer died in 1986.

Survivors include two sons, Bob and Jack Kivle, both of Spokane; one daughter, Kathy Sneva of Salem, Ore.; two sisters, Peggy Johnson of Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Judy Lafave of Minnesota; one brother, Oral Halland of Twin Cities, Minn.; and one grandchild.

George Rasmussen Spokane

Funeral Mass for George A. Rasmussen was Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Born in North Dakota, Mr. Rasmussen died Dec. 29.

He graduated from Hillyard High School in 1932 and was employed by the Great Northern Railroad as a conductor until he retired.

He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Rasmussen was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and Hillyard Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Catherine Rasmussen; one daughter, Barbara Lancaster of Tacoma; two sons, Richard Wester of Campbell, Calif., and Robert Wester of Ephrata, Wash.; one sister, Rebecca Mackey of Spokane; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Royer ‘Bogie’ Bogenreif Spokane

Service for Royer Franklin “Bogie” Bogenreif, 83, was Tuesday at Holy Cross Chapel.

Born in Minot, N.D., Mr. Bogenreif died last Friday.

He was a licensed public accountant and had lived in Spokane for more than 60 years.

He was a member and secretary of Eagles Lodge No. 2 and was a member of the Hillyard Lions and Boy Scouts of America. He had worked on the Hillyard HiJinks for years and was the secretary for the Eagles Bowling Tournament for 19 years.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine Bogenreif; two sons, David Bogenreif of Spokane and Richard Bogenreif of Reno, Nev.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
