Women

UCLA’s Nickey Hilbert scored a career- and game-high 27 points to lead her Bruins past Washington State 85-75 in the opening Pacific-10 Conference women’s basketball game for both clubs at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles on Friday night.

Hilbert scored 14 points and Kisa Hughes, who finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds, added 13 in the opening half as the Bruins (6-4) built a 22-point advantage, then fought off WSU’s challenge in the closing half to snap the Cougars’ seven-game win streak. Krinka Kristich added 16 points for UCLA.

The Cougars (8-3) were led by Jenni Ruff’s 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Julie Wight added 13 before fouling out. Kristin Erickson and Yvonne Kunze each added 10 points for the Cougars.

The Bruins, who entered the game with a 43.3-shooting percentage, burried half their shots, making 32 of 64 field-goal attempts. They also shot 82.6 percent at the free-throw line (19-23), well ahead of their 56 percent average through their first nine games.

The Cougars close out a Los Angeles-area road swing Sunday, taking on Southern California at the Trojans’ Lyon Center at 2 p.m.
