Pirates Prevail In Ot

From Staff And Wire Reports

Perhaps Whitworth’s problem has been the Pirates haven’t faced tough enough competition. Or perhaps the competition has toughed up the Whit women.

Whatever, the Seattle Pacific Falcons found themselves with more than they could handle Monday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse as the 17th-ranked NCAA Division II school succumbed 82-79 to the NAIA Division II Pirates in overtime.

A trio of juniors - 6-foot center Sherri Northington, 5-8 guard Jennifer Tissue and 5-5 guard Rebecca Moore - combined for 57 points to outdo a trio of Falcons who combined for 52 and lead the Pirates to just their second win in 10 games.

Northington had 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 on free throws; Tissue added 21; and Moore 16.

Linnea Jarvits, a 5-8 junior, scored 20 for Seattle Pacific (12-3) and Erica Lindberg and Chantel Vinson 16 each.

Whitworth cashed in from the free-throw line, sinking 21 of 34 as the visitors were called for twice as many fouls as the Pirates (24-12) and lost three starters to fouls, including Jarvits and Vinson.
