Billygoats’ Talented Herd Grows
Touted as the boys team to beat at this year’s state tournament, Pateros enriched its position with a surprise Christmas gift.
Jason Crawley, who was leading Entiat in scoring with 16 points per game, moved to Pateros in late December. An eligibility committee cleared him to play for Pateros.
The Billygoats, seventh at last year’s tournament, already had three players scoring more than 15 points per game - Garrett Zwar, Patrick Hunter and Parker Barth.
“The rich get richer,” said Almira/ Coulee-Hartline coach Jim Wacker, who leads his team to Pateros on Tuesday.
Derailed - for a moment
Defending state girls champion Wishkah Valley had its 36-game win streak snapped in a 52-40 loss to Class AA cross-town rival Aberdeen on Dec. 30.
The Loggers rebounded by beating Taholah 106-36 in their next game.
Down the road
Responding to pressure, South Bend boys basketball coach Dan Cearns resigned in late December after his team’s 3-5 start.
“I suspect it was a few fans that sparked (the administration’s pressure),” said Cearns, whose son Spencer was topping the team in scoring. “When you have a kid on the team it makes it even tougher. (The fans) just don’t understand.”
The Cearnses relocated to Raymond, where they own property. Spencer Cearns played last weekend for the Gulls.
Brighter future
The Cusick girls have struggled to a 0-8 record, but expect better results in the years ahead. The Panthers have seven ninth-graders on their roster.
Four-year star
Curlew’s Wes Paul, an integral part of the Cougars’ roster since his freshman year, is 60 points shy of 1,000 for his career.
Best rebounder, best name
Leading state boys in rebounding (11.4) and double takes is Indian Heritage’s Matt Everybody Talks About. Keep up the rebounding, Matt, and everybody will.
