Comparison Shop When Choosing Refrigerator

Amy Mickelson Washington State Energy Office

Q. I’m remodeling my kitchen and want to buy a new refrigerator to replace the old one. What energy efficient features should I look for? And how can I recycle the old one?

A. When buying a new refrigerator, do comparison shopping by using the bright yellow Energy Guide labels. They tell you the cost of running the refrigerator, so compare that unit to other similar models. Features to look for in an energy-efficient refrigerator are good insulation inside the walls (urethane insulation is more efficient than fiberglass insulation of the same thickness), tighter door seals, and a larger coil surface area.

While remodeling the kitchen, consider placing your refrigerator in a spot away from the range, heater vent or sunny windows. Also, allow adequate space (3-4 inches) above, behind and on the sides for free air circulation. These measures will help the efficient operation of your refrigerator.

Recycling your old refrigerator requires special processing by qualified professionals. Refrigerators use chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases to keep things cool. These gases can damage the earth’s protective ozone layer and must be recovered before recycling.

Spokane County’s Waste-to-Energy plant and two recycling/ transfer stations also accept refrigerators for recycling for a small fee. For more details or a list of private appliance recycling businesses in the area, call the Spokane Regional Recycling Hotline at 747-0242. Outside of Spokane County, call (800) RECYCLE to locate an appliance recycling business.

For a list of energy-efficient refrigerators call the Energy Hotline at 324-7980 or (800) 962-9731.
