‘Current Affair’ To Be History After Summer
It’s all over for “A Current Affair,” officials at Twentieth Television say.
“Affair,” in its ninth season, will run through the summer. The decision has nothing to do with ratings, a spokeswoman says. Still, the show, with new anchor Jon Scott, ranks third, behind “Inside Edition” and “Hard Copy,” among syndicated magazine shows.
Twentieth is pulling the plug because “Affair” was unable to get commitments for the fall in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, the country’s three largest markets, the spokeswoman says.
“Affair,” which began as a sleazy tabloid under Maury Povich, had cleaned up its act this season with Scott, a former “Dateline NBC” correspondent. It stopped paying for stories, producers say, and changed to a more news-driven format.
‘Seinfeld’ to return, mag says
Ending months of speculation that this would be its final season, “Seinfeld” will return for an eighth season, next week’s TV Guide reports.
The magazine, citing sources at Castle Rock Entertainment, says cast members Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards and executive producer Larry David have signed a tentative agreement to keep the NBC series going for another year.
‘Knot’s Landing’ miniseries
There’s a script in the works for a four-hour miniseries based on the old CBS favorite “Knots Landing,” according to Warner Bros.
However, according to a source, until the script is approved, there is no certainty the mini will be made. Also, none of the original cast has been signed, though once a deal is complete, several are expected to come on board.
“Knots Landing,” a “Dallas” spinoff, revolved around the characters in a Southern California cul-de-sac. It aired from 1979 to 1993, making it the longest-running primetime soap.
The large cast included Michele Lee, Kevin Dobson, William Devane, Donna Mills, Lisa Hartman, Ted Shackelford, Joan Van Ark, Julie Harris, Halle Berry and Alec Baldwin.
As previously reported, “Dallas” is definitely resurfacing in TV-movie form within the next year. Production on that project is expected to start in the spring, with many of the original cast members.
