Star Goalie Becomes Latest Oilers Castoff

Associated Press

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Bill Ranford, one of the last vestiges of the team’s Stanley Cup era of the 1980s, was traded Thursday to the Boston Bruins for right wing Mariusz Czerkawski and junior league defenseman Sean Brown.

Edmonton unloaded Ranford after recently signing Curtis Joseph to a three-year contract.

Ranford joins a long list of former Oiler greats who have been traded since the late 1980s. The list began with defenseman Paul Coffey and includes Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.
