The Clock Struck 12 And The Judds Hit Paydirt

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

Naomi Judd is semi-retired from her successful musical career, elder daughter Wynonna is continuing her solo singing act and baby sister Ashley is quite the actress.

But Ashley, who has a small but memorable role in the recent film “Heat,” recalls that poverty played a big role in their lives.

“We didn’t have a telephone or a TV and that was when my mother and sister actually started singing together,” Judd told W magazine. “We would sit on the front porch and they would sing, and I would play with my imaginary friends.”

Success followed style. “We had flair,” Judd said. “Mom bought all her clothes from second-hand stores. She ran around in ‘40s dresses all through the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. And, of course, we couldn’t have a regular car. We had a cherry red ‘57 Chevy.”

Loose talk

First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton on life in the White House after dark (on The Nashville Network): “That’s when the sweatpants and the jeans come on and the card games start and the yelling at the football games and basketball games on TV.”

He won’t fight again because of the no smokin’ rule

Joe Frazier turns 52 today.

Our first guess would have been The Peppermint Patties

Here’s a trivia question: What was the original name of the rock group Live? Answer: The band, which hails from York, Pa., formed in the mid ‘80s as Public Affection. Band members include Ed Kowalczyk, Patrick Dahlheimer, Chad Gracey and Chad Taylor.

And, it appears, Jon Lovitz will help O.J. with his version

This is considered big news back East: Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Teresa Carpenter will help write Marcia Clark’s $4.2 million book on the O.J. Simpson trial. Out West, we like to note that Spokesman-Review reporter Jess Walter is working with Clark’s ex-assistant on his Simpson trial memoir.

A casting call will determine who plays the hypodermic

W. Speers of The Philadelphia Inquirer ran this item in a recent column: “Prima ballerina Darcey Bussell will play the deadly virus in a new ballet about AIDS to be presented next month by London’s Royal Ballet. The one-acter, in which the corps de ballet will play white blood cells, will be danced to a score by the late Benjamin Britten.”

That first little simian is expected in June

“12 Monkeys” star Madeleine Stowe, 37, and husband Brian Benben (“Dream On”) are expecting their first child. “I have a little girl on the way, due in June,” she says. “We’ll live on our Texas ranch because it’s far away from the Hollywood machine. Los Angeles is ridiculous. People there are worried about which preschools their unborn children will go to. Is this breeding better kids?”

Most of us aren’t that old, but we’re approaching

Another sign that Baby Boomers are becoming even more dominant: The best-selling large print book of 1995 was a 19-year-old book titled “Sex After Sixty” by Robert N. Butler and Myrna I. Lewis.
