There are nights when West Valley’s Frontier League opponents can’t stop senior guard David Schillinger; they can only hope to contain him. And there nights when they can’t do either.

On Friday night at East Valley, Schillinger poured in 15 third-quarter points, half his game-high 30, and the Eagles (2-0 Frontier, 9-1 overall) rocked EV 89-59 in an emotion-filled contest.

The pumped-up Eagles played under the direction of assistant Jamie Nilles after head coach Joe Feist’s one-game suspension - imposed after he received two technical fouls and an ejection in a game two weeks ago - was upheld Thursday.

One-game suspensions of Schillinger and teammate Ty Gregorak (for taunting technical fouls in the same game) were rescinded, but members of the District 7 board which ruled on the appeals were instructed by board secretary Walt Thorpe to withhold comment on the reasons for both decisions, according to one member of the board.

“We knew we’d have to step it up tonight,” said Schillinger after the victory. “Coach Feist is the best coach around here, but Coach Nilles did exactly what he would have done in this game.”

That included turning the Eagles loose from the opening tip at EV, where they pressed and ran to an early 13-5 lead as the Knights (0-3, 2-8) turned the ball over five times in the first three minutes and got into early foul trouble.

They still managed to close to 20-17 late in the first period on a pair of 3-point baskets, but the Eagles went on a 16-4 second-quarter run to pull away to a 38-23 lead shortly before halftime.

That happened without much of a contribution from Schillinger - “I needed to settle down and wait for better shots,” he said later - but junior Austin Gerrells, with eight points in the quarter, took up some of the scoring slack. The Eagles’ defense did the rest, limiting EV to only four baskets as WV took a 40-27 halftime lead.

EV trimmed it to 40-32 after 2 minutes of the third period, but West Valley outscored the Knights 25-8 the rest of the quarter as Schillinger contributed four straight deep 3s. WV was already ahead 53-38 when the Eagles scored 12 straight points near the end of the period, and the fourth period was a little sloppy, to put it kindly.

“It’s been a tough couple weeks,” said Nilles in the Eagles locker room. “I usually work with the junior varsity, but this week I spent lots of time with the varsity.

“Joe had the kids very well prepared emotionally for this, but we didn’t know anything for sure until yesterday,” he continued.

“We seemed unsure of ourselves in the first half tonight, but the second half was different.”

Gerrells and WV teammate Joe Bonner each added 14 points for the Eagles, who made 23 of 29 free throws. For EV, James Spotted Horse had 19 points and nine rebounds, and Brad Wilson added 13 points.
