Bullpups Claim Share Of Gsl Title

Gonzaga Prep clinched a tie Thursday for its first Greater Spokane League wrestling title.

The team that can catch G-Prep is the one left on its schedule.

While the host Bullpups (7-0) ended North Central’s league schedule with a 44-24 decision, University (6-1) won at Shadle Park. Prep and U-Hi meet Thursday at Prep to complete the GSL season.

Lewis Peyron (101 pounds) started Prep toward its win by pinning Nick Stuart. The Bullpups’ Eric Hundahl (148) pinned Casey Beville, who is 6-1 in league. For the Indians (4-4), Jack Baker (108) pinned Brian Daley at 5:30 in a match tied at 2.

U-Hi set up the final showdown with a 48-13 win at Shadle (0-7). The Titans’ Andy Roberts had a 20-5 technical fall over Kevin Eng. Shawn Howard (122) of the Highlanders remained unbeaten with a 6-4 win over Josh Knowles.

Elsewhere, James Clark (158) scored a 16-6 major decision over Lucas McGarry to remain unbeaten for the year as Mead (5-2) toppled visiting Lewis and Clark 44-21. Micah Maser (122) of the Tigers (1-6) beat Josh Sicilia 6-2 with a three-point near fall in the final seconds.

At Central Valley, Shane Yackel (168) edged Shawn McMackin 3-2 with a second-round escape and the Bears (5-2) beat visiting Rogers 43-21. Brandon Brown (122) of CV topped Daryl Groom 4-2 in their first meeting since early December, when Brown broke Groom’s foot. The Pirates are 1-6.

Frontier League

At East Valley, Justin Walker (115) earned an 11-3 major decision over Adrian Bojorquez in a meeting of state veterans and the Knights (4-0) topped Riverside 65-20. Gary Adamson (108) and Rusty Ruchert (148) added pins for the Knights. The Rams are 1-3.

Elsewhere, the match between Colville (3-0) and visiting West Valley (2-0) was suspended at 190 when the official was knocked unconscious. Colville led 24-20 with four matches left. No reason for the official’s injury or makeup date was reported. Colville is at EV on Tuesday.

Nothing was reported from Clarkston (1-2), which met Cheney (0-2).
