LMU 71, Santa Clara 62

Kenny Hotopp scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Lions past the Broncos Friday night at Los Angeles.

It was Loyola’s first home-court victory over Santa Clara since the 1989-90 season.

The Lions held Santa Clara to 31 percent field-goal shooting, including 3 of 22 from 3-point range.

Santa Clara started quickly, taking a 12-7 lead at the 14-minute mark. But the Broncos only scored seven points the rest of the half as Loyola took a 27-19 lead.

Santa Clara got 20 points from Marlon Garnett and 14 by Steve Nash.

Junior college transfer David Sivulich, who leads the West Coast Conference in scoring, put in 28 points at Malibu, Calif., as the Gaels sent the Waves to a fourth straight loss.

Josh Unruh added 17 points and Mahershala Gilmore and Kamran Sufi 13 each as the Gaels climbed out of a last-place tie with the Waves.

Gerald Brown had 28 points for Pepperdine.

Saint Mary’s shot a season-high 58 percent (27 of 46) from the field, and hit 12 of 21 from 3-point range.

The Gaels controlled the game and built a 40-31 halftime lead.
