Wildcats Arise On Dickerson’s Big Second Half

Associated Press

Michael Dickerson scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and made a key defensive play in the final minutes as No. 18 Arizona snapped No. 13 UCLA’s Pac-10 winning streak at 15 games with an 88-79 victory Saturday at Tucson, Ariz.

The Bruins (12-4, 5-1 Pac-10) had won their last 10 games, but they couldn’t withstand a 3-point barrage by the Wildcats (13-3, 3-2), who made 8 of 12 in the second half and were 13-of-20 in the game.

Reggie Geary completed a comeback from a six-point deficit in the second half when he made a 3-pointer with 8:34 to play, giving the Wildcats a 64-63 lead they never relinquished. Dickerson made it 67-63 with a 3-pointer seconds later and hit another with 6:50 to play for a 72-67 lead.

Then he turned to defense. With 1:31 left, he battled UCLA’s Charles O’Bannon for a loose ball, and Arizona got the ball when it went out of bounds.

By the time UCLA got the ball back for a layup by O’Bannon with 53 seconds left, the Wildcats had an 82-75 lead and rode out the game at the foul line.
