Cougars Push Across 14 Runs To End Slump, Rout Hawaii

The Washington State Cougars baseball team broke out of its offensive slump in a big way Sunday, handing host Hawaii a 14-0 shutout in the final game of their three-game series.

The WSU win came on the heels of a 7-2 loss Friday and a 6-5 setback late Saturday night. Today, the Cougars move to Hawaii-Hilo, where they will challenge Texas Christian in a noon game. At 3 p.m. WSU will then play host Hawaii-Hilo.

WSU smashed 14 hits off six Hawaii pitchers Sunday, with sophomore Kyle Poffenroth throwing the first seven innings to pick up the win. Brendan Grutz and Wayne Vezzetti each worked one inning of hitless ball in relief. Poffenroth allowed four hits, walked three and struck out seven.

Mike Wetmore did much of the damage for WSU, collecting his first home run and first triple of the season. He also stole two bases, scored three times and drove home a pair of runs. Josh Hamik added a three-run shot in the third.
