Obituaries

Robert Copeland Carlsbad, Calif.

Service for Robert L. Copeland, 29, will be today at 1:30 p.m. at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston. Burial will follow at Norman Hill Cemetery in Lewiston.

Mr. Copeland, a longtime Lewiston resident and area car salesman, died Wednesday from injuries suffered in a car accident.

He was born in Idaho Falls, and attended school in Lewiston. He worked at various jobs at Tony Copeland Ford in Lewiston and sold cars in Spokane, Portland, and Las Vegas.

He also operated a rental equipment store in Coeur d’Alene before moving to California.

Mr. Copeland enjoyed working on motorcycles, motocross racing and restoring his Porsche sports car.

He also loved water and snow skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding and surfing. He liked spending time with his niece and nephews.

Survivors include his parents, R.L. “Tony” and LaDean Copeland of Lewiston; three sisters, Clarice Keller of Clarkston, Wash., Denise Lowe of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Heidi Swinehart of Zillah, Wash.; Grandparents, Lowell Copeland and Eudora Leverton both of Las Vegas; and grandmother, Golda Jolley of Spokane; one niece and several nephews.

Beatrice Otto Coeur d’Alene

No service is planned for Beatrice Julia Otto, 77. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Otto died Nov. 19 at the transitional care center in Coeur d’Alene.

She was born in Wisconsin and moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1992.

Survivors include three daughters, Rosemarie La Boche of Athol, Carol Whalen of Wisconsin, and Faye Neff of Coeur d’Alene; a son, Ken Bausch of Wisconsin; and nine grandchildren.

E. Edward Reid St. Maries

Memorial service for E. Edward Reid, 54, will be held later. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home of St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Reid, who was born in California, died Friday.

He attended a junior college and served with the California National Guard.

He lived in various cities in California before moving to St. Maries in 1978. He owned Ed’s Sporting Goods Store before selling it in 1982.

He later worked for Regulus Stud Mill as a boiler operator and was a truck driver for Systems Transport and Jack Buell Trucking. Illness forced him to retire in 1994.

Mr. Reid enjoyed muzzleloading, hunting and fishing and loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Louise; a son, Wayne Reid of St. Maries; two daughters, Tina Stefanski of St. Maries, and Trish Spray of Coos Bay, Ore.; his mother, Amy Southcott of California; two brothers, Kenny Reid and Dewane Reid, both of California; and six grandchildren.

Essie Gimble Spokane

At her request, no service is scheduled for Essie R. Gimble, 105. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Gimble, who was born in Missoula, died Jan. 13.

She worked for many years as a buyer for The Crescent department store, retiring in 1953.

Her husband, Harry Gimble, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Joan Griffiths, and a great-granddaughter, Jade Griffiths, both of Lynnwood, Wash.

John Schultz Spokane

Graveside service for John H. “Jack” Schultz, 82, is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball & Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schultz, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Thursday.

He graduated from North Central High School and was a bookkeeper for Armour and Co. and the Rice Meat Packing Co.

Survivors include his wife, Lorna Schultz; a son, Kent Schultz of Spokane; a daughter, Lynn Howell of Marysville, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

William Dodge Newport, Wash.

At his request no service is scheduled for William Frederick Dodge, 76. He will be inurned next to his father at the Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River, Idaho. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home, Newport, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Frederick, who was born at Priest River, died Jan. 11.

He graduated from high school in Priest River.

During World War II he served in the Army in the Persian Gulf.

Mr. Frederick worked as a sawyer for the Potlatch Co. before retiring in 1978.

Survivors include his wife Jackie; one stepson, Robert Sheets of Newport; three stepdaughters, Patricia Erlewine and Sylvia Stempniak, both of Newport, and Linda Ellis of Clarkston, Wash.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

John Pitts Spokane

Graveside service was held for John Paul Pitts, 49, in East Wenatchee, Wash., on Jan 12. Jones and Jones Funeral Directors were in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Pitts, who was born in Wenatchee, died Jan. 9.

He graduated from Eastmont High School in East Wenatchee and worked for several years for the U.S. Forest Service in the Entiat Ranger District.

He moved to Spokane in the late 1970s.

He was a member of the Wenatchee First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Lola Gange of Wenatchee; two sisters, Mary Formo of Seattle and Judy Johanson of Wenatchee; and one brother, Bill Pitts of Auburn, Wash.

Jamie Vocature Spokane

Private family services are scheduled for Jamie Louise Vocature, 44.

Mrs. Vocature, who was born in Portland, Maine, died Thursday.

She was a graduate of Ferris High School.

Survivors include a son, James Vocature; her parents, John and Holly Sonneland; a sister, Robin Wellford; and three brothers, John Sonneland, Stewart Sonneland and Andrew Sonneland.

Matilda Schmick Colfax, Wash.

Service for Matilda “Tillie” Schmick, 85, is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax. Burial will follow at the Colfax Cemetery.

Mrs. Schmick, who was born in Russia, died Thursday.

She left Russia with her family when she was two and settled in Canada. Later they moved to Portland and then to Endicott, Wash. She graduated from Colfax High School.

In 1929 she married Henry Schmick in Lewiston. They farmed south of Colfax until retiring in 1972, when they moved into Colfax. They moved to Spokane in 1986. Her husband died in 1992.

Mrs. Schmick was a member of the Colfax Full Gospel Assembly of God Church, where whe was active in the Women’s Missionary Council.

Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Brannan of St. John, Wash., Lois Zimmermann of Lynden, Wash., Joanne Schmick of Spokane and Faye Lang of Camby, Ore.; one son, Bob Schmick of Otis Orchards; four sisters, Mary Schmick and Betty Tregoning, both of Seattle, Emma Strasdin of Somers, Mont., and Louise Palmer of Cory, Colo.; three brothers, Elmer Schmick and Herb Schmick, both of Colfax, and Richard Schmick of Foster City, Calif.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marvin ‘Guy’ Peone Wellpinit, Wash.

Funeral Mass for Marvin D. “Guy” Peone, 51, was celebrated Tuesday at the Spokane Tribal Longhouse in Wellpinit. Interment was at Hubert Cemetery, Ford, Wash. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Peone, who was born in Nespelem, Wash., died Jan. 12.

He was a member of the Spokane Tribe of Indians.

He was a graduate of Mary Walker School in Springdale, Wash.

Survivors include one daughter, Charlie McCraige of Pullman; one son, Andrew Matherly of Wellpinit; his father, Richard Peone of Ford; six brothers, Anthony Peone, Richard Peone and Ray Peone, all of Ford, Alfred Peone and Eugene Peone, both of Wellpinit, and Lawrence Peone of Buena Park, Calif.; one sister, Jeannette Biggs of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his best friend, Mary Wynne; and her children, all of Wellpinit.

Delvin Curtis Spokane

Service for Delvin M. Curtis, 56, was held Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Curtis, who born in Bakersfield, Calif., died Jan. 9.

He served with the Army in Korea, Vietnam, Germany, France and Belgium.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Curtis; his mother, Alma Curtis of Oildale, Calif.; two sons Delvin Curtis of Warsaw, Mo., and Robert Curtis of Spokane; two daughters, Kelley Dean of Okmulgee, Okla., and Margaret Baumgarden of Spokane; three brothers, Lee Curtis and Neal Curtis, both of Oildale, and Rogers Curtis of Belton, Texas; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
