Audit Discovers Embezzlement

From Staff And Wire Reports

Pend Oreille County Commissioners confirmed Monday that an audit found an employee in the mental health department embezzled about $5,000 over several years.

The employee, who commissioners and Prosecutor Tom Metzger declined to identify, was suspended with pay on Jan. 11. An ongoing investigation may lead to criminal charges, the officials said.

Metzger said the employee is suspected of fraudulently claiming reimbursement for supplies, services and other items.

The loss, however, pales in comparison to the county’s costs to investigate and prosecute the case.

Commission Chairman Mike Hanson said the state audit alone will cost $10,000 to $15,000. The cost to the county will be even higher if a special prosecutor is appointed, as may be necessary to avoid the appearance of a conflict, Commissioner Karl McKenzie added.
