Illegal Campaign Donations Admitted

Compiled From Wire Services

A former moving company president pleaded guilty Monday to funneling illegal contributions to members of Congress.

Leslie Alfred Taber was accused of passing off corporate contributions as personal donations from him or his wife. It is illegal for corporations to donate to political campaigns.

Taber pleaded guilty in connection with contributions made in 1990 to Reps. Jim Chapman, D-Texas, in the amount of $1,000; Charles Wilson, D-Texas, $1,000; John Conyers, D-Michigan, $2,000; Chet Edwards, who was elected in 1990, $1,000; and Rep. Jim Bates, D-Calif., $1,000, who was defeated in 1990.

None of the congressmen have been charged with wrongdoing.

Taber could get up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each of five counts. Sentencing was set for May 24.
