Dollar Posts Modest Gains

The dollar moved slightly higher against most major currencies Tuesday but its advance was restrained by the ongoing federal budget crisis and uncertainty ahead of the State of the Union address.

Word that Germany’s central bank may consider cutting interest rates drove the greenback higher against the German mark and helped the dollar gain against other currencies.

In New York, the dollar bought 1.4791 German marks, up from 1.4771 on Monday. The dollar ended at 105.84 against the Japanese yen, compared with 105.77 the day before.
