Ferris Pulls Off Reversal Led Late By Jayme Morrisette, Saxons Avenge Lopsided Loss To Mead
Ferris learned more from losing than Mead did from winning.
The Saxons, bombed by 20 when they played the Panthers in their Greater Spokane League girls opener last month, bounced back to win 48-45 at the Arena Tuesday night.
It was the eighth straight win for Ferris since the 53-33 loss to the Panthers and ended No. 3 Mead’s 10-game winning streak. It was the best game of the four girls games played at the Arena, which had two courts down to accommodate all eight GSL games and drew a crowd of 2,740.
“We realized we needed to pick it up a level because they always play a step above,” Ferris senior Jayme Morrisette said. “We knew we needed to match that.”
Morrisette struggled in the first half, but classmate Jennifer Swinton and three sophomore starters for the Saxons (11-2, 8-1) forged a 24-20 halftime lead after trailing 17-11 after one quarter. Then Morrisette stepped up, scoring 14 of her 17 points in the second half. She hit 5 of 6 shots, including four 3-pointers. Each 3 seemed to come at a crucial time, as the shot clock was winding down.
“We came out ready to play,” Ferris coach Janet Skaife said. “We attacked their press and stuck some shots. The last time we were miserable, 3 for 33 at one point.”
Outside of Stacy Clinesmith, the Panthers (12-2, 9-1) were ineffective. Clinesmith scored 18 - 11 in the first quarter and none in the fourth. Holly Turner helped as Mead, down 46-38 with 2:19 to play, closed within 46-45 on her 3-pointer with 10 seconds left. Sophomore Amy George knocked down two pressure free throws and Mead never got a shot to tie at the buzzer.
“They just played great defense, controlled the tempo and hit big shots,” Mead coach Jeanne Helfer said. “They were running a matchup and coming out of it. We weren’t very patient. That’s a credit to them.”
Karie Pruett, George and Janelle Morrisette, the Saxons sophs, only scored 17 points, but each basket was big. With the 5-foot-8 George grabbing 13 rebounds, six on the offensive end, the Saxons embarrassed the taller Panthers on the boards 30-21.
Janelle Morrisette, 5-11, was a huge help to Swinton, who was dominated in the first matchup. This time, Swinton had 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting while Mead’s front line of 6-3 Jennifer Bennett, 6-1 Chelsea Clark, 6-1 Jennifer Clark and 5-10 Jamie Wakefield combined for 11 points and nine rebounds.
“We weren’t as nervous,” Swinton said. “The first time it was the opening game in the new Arena. This time we were ready.”

Just like the first time, the Bullpups (9-5, 5-5) built a big lead before the Titans (6-7, 4-6) battled back, only to come up short.
Jennifer Williams had six of her 21 points and Theresa Williams 6 of her 10 in the first quarter as Prep raced to a 24-10 lead. The U-Hi rally fell short in part because the Titans struggled from the line, making 5 of 12.

Crystal Lee held 12 of her 31 points in the first quarter and made 6 of 8 3-pointers to spark the fifth-ranked Bears (11-2, 8-2) past the Tigers (6-8, 2-8).
LC was within 12 at hafltime but missed all six shots in the third quarter as CV scored 16 points to break the game open. Nine of 10 players scored for the Bears but Lee, the league’s leading scorer, was the only player in double figures.
Ferris is at Central Valley on Friday for a 6:15 game.
