Former Hells Angel Enters Guilty Plea

From Staff Reports

The former vice president of the Spokane chapter of the Hells Angels has pleaded guilty to federal firearms charges.

Evan Barton, who says he no longer belongs to the outlaw motorcycle gang, admitted Monday to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

A second federal charge, accusing him of being a felon in possession of ammunition, was dismissed as part of a plea bargain.

The 29-year-old Spokane man faces 24 to 30 months in federal prison when he’s sentenced April 1 by U.S. District Judge Robert Whaley.

The judge allowed the former Mead High School student to remain out of jail under a $20,000 bond.

As a condition of his release, Barton must remain at an in-patient drug-treatment center.

Barton has been arrested 11 times in the past year for driving with a suspended license, assault and drug possession. He has been convicted twice of possessing methamphetamine.

He was indicted in October and surrendered Dec. 1 to face the two firearms charges.

A federal grand jury heard testimony from agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms, who caught Barton with a .22-caliber pistol and loaded ammunition clips.

The seizure came on Sept. 1 after Barton was evicted from his Airway Heights apartment for not paying rent.

Agents also seized Hells Angels business records and membership rosters.
