G-Prep, U-Hi In Showdown Tonight

Gonzaga Prep’s last obstacle to an unbeaten Greater Spokane League season and undisputed first place is tonight, when the team hosts once-beaten and defending champ University.

The teams match up strength against strength in nearly every weight class.

Of particular interest are these classes: At 108 pounds, U-Hi’s Craig Bishop is unbeaten in league and Chris Montgomery has lost once. At 122, Prep’s Cory Brannon and U-Hi’s Josh Knowles are each 5-1. At 178, the Bullpups’ Rex Mangiaracina and U-Hi’s Mike Clark are unbeaten.

Dreaming about Auburn

Three area teams will be in Auburn this weekend at the second annual Dream Duals.

Central Valley and G-Prep will represent this region in the eight-team AAA competition and East Valley will be in the AA events.

Teams will be paired against each other in a tournament-style format.

Semifinals winners wrestle for first and second, losers for third and fifth. Consolation winners will wrestle for fourth and sixth and losers for seventh and eighth.

This is the second appearance for the Knights, who were sixth last year.

District qualifying:

The Northeast A and Bi-County leagues hold sub-district tournaments Saturday.

The NEA seeds its top two wrestlers during the regular season into the District A-B meet Feb. 3.

Each team is allowed two entries in each weight to the sub-district at Freeman. At stake are three spots, Nos. 3-5, into the district tournament. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m.

League champion Liberty will play host to the Bi-County meet. At stake are four berths into the district meet. The meet starts at 10 a.m.

Liberty has four No. 1 seeds, led by unbeaten 190-pound senior Jon Mackay.

Frontier League

Eric Seward (122) and Gabe Schaefer (135) had pins to send Cheney to a 19-0 lead, and the visiting Blackhawks (2-4) held on for a 34-32 win at West Valley (3-2).

Josh Kelp’s pin at 190 for WV cut the lead to 22-21, but Tom Jud’s 5-4 win at 215 and a pin by Nic Vigil (275) padded Cheney’s lead.

WV hosts East Valley (4-1) tonight in a league-ending meet. EV and Colville (4-1) are in line to tie for the league title, although Colville beat EV on Tuesday.
