Dollar Hits 4-Month High Vs. Mark

The dollar hit a four-month high against the German mark Thursday amid speculation that German monetary officials want to weaken the mark to help spur their economy.

The mark’s weakness allowed the dollar to gain against other major European currencies.

By 4 p.m. EST in New York, the dollar bought 1.4892 marks, compared with 1.4836 marks Wednesday. The dollar was last above 1.4880 on Sept. 20. The dollar ended at 106.90 yen, down from 106.93 yen the day before.
